JAMES M. GOAD, (probable) son of
Robert Goad and (Jane?) Dodson was born 1781,
and died May 23, 1829 in White Co., TN. He married MARGARET (Peggy) SHOCKLEY
October 18, 1804 in South River, Bedford Co. VA (Source: Sharon Minton
Hill (Jan 21, 97) and WFT CD 5 - 2894), daughter of Thomas Shockley
and Elizabeth. After James Goad's death, Margaret married John Franklin.

James Goad was born 1781 per marriage records (WFT CD-5, 2894)
According to Kenneth F. Haas, "descendants of James and Peggy
lean toward Robert as the father because of the prevalence of that name
among succeeding generations..., often a good general guide but certainly
not proof...." Haas cites their marriage as 18 October,
1804.
According to "Shockley Families of VA, TN, MD and DE", compiled
by Mrs. Donald Trip in 1970, on page 101 of Pittsylvania Marriage Bonds
1767 -1864 (GS call no 975.5665 V25g) is listed: Goad, James and Peggy
Shockly - 13 Oct 1806, Thomas Shockley, bond.
In "Marriages of Pittsylvania County Virginia, 1806-1830," compiled
by Kathleen Booth Williams, 1980, their marriage is listed: 13 October
1806. James GOARD and Peggy Shockley. Sur. Thomas Shockley. p. 41.
In both Mrs. Tripp's book and another in 1987 by a Miss Nancy Miller
of Dallas, Texas, Peggy's father is Thomas Shockley, a resident of Pittsylvania
County in the area of the Goads from the time he was born in 1755 until
the time he left in late 1806 or early 1807, apparently shortly after the
marriage of James and Peggy.
Again from Mrs. Tripp -
Pittsylvania Co. Va Dees (GS ser no 7899) pt 13, Bk 15 p. 238 19
Jan 1807. Thomas Shocklee and Moley his wife of Bedford Co., Va mortgaged
50 acres of land in Pittsylvania Co., Va on the South side of Pig river,
a part of Daniel Kriter Son's land whereon he now lives sold to said Shockley
20 Oct 1800 adj. to Joseph Towler, Kriter and David Ross to John Smith
of Pittsylvania Co.
This JOSEPH TOWLER was the same name as the man who had bought the land
of Robert Goad and his son, Thomas, on October
19, 1804. He had also bought the inheritance land of William
Goad (Robert's brother) in 1789 and also the name of the father of at least
2 women who married Goads.
In his book, Haas comments on the descendants of James and Margaret
ending up in Arkansas near the descendants of sons of Robert Goad. The
question I had was:
If James was a son of Robert, why did he move to White County, Tennessee,
instead of Maury County, Tennessee where many of the other Goads went?
The answer to that question, at least in part, is that many of Margaret's
family, including at least three brothers and her father, ended up in White
County by way of Grainger County, TN. This is documented in census data
and in Thomas's Revolutionary War pension application.
It also appears that they may have left shortly Pittsylvania County
after the marriage of Margaret and James. I it likely that the timing of
the marriage was based, at least in part, on the planned departures of
the Shockley clan.
Again, from Mrs. Tripp:
Pittsylvania Co; Va Court Records (GS ser no 7901) pt 9. Bk 12 p.
346,
Brown Leftwich and Co. pltf agst Henry Jacobs and Thomas Shockly defts
(In Debt)
Deft Shockley not an inhabitant and suit abatd him. Mar 1807.
So, in October 1806, James and Margaret are married and her father,
Thomas, sells his land . Five months later in a law suit for indebtedness,
Thomas is listed as not an inhabitant.
Haas says that Margaret was the daughter of Revolutionary War
Veteran William Shockley. The only William Shockley in the DAR Patriot
Index is from Maryland.
The Thomas Shockley discussed here was also Revolutionary War
Veteran. In his application for pension he states that he
-
was born in Pittsylvania County, Va.
-
went from there to Grainger County TN, (where his father and brothers had
moved some time before) for a time
-
and ended up in White County, TN.
Additional information tying the Shockley family to the same area of Virginia
as the Goads is that Margaret Shockly is apparently a grandniece of Owen
Adkins, who married Agnes Goad, John Goad Jr's daughter and Robert Goad's
niece. Agnes and Owen were about the same age as Thomas Shockley.... and
about 5 - 10 years younger than Robert Goad.
