The first Foreign Death for Kalamazoo County was
recorded in 1931; records continue to the present time.

Notes for
the Foreign Marriages and Intents to Marry
Kalamazoo County, Michigan
|
|
|
|
The Kalamazoo County Clerk’s office
has twenty-three certificates of Foreign Marriage and
fifty Intents to Marry on file.
The Foreign Marriages belong to couples who were married
in a place other than Kalamazoo County; however, either
the bride or groom (or both) was a resident of Kalamazoo
County.
The Intents to Marry involve couples (at least one of
which was a resident of Kalamazoo County) who filed a
document stating they intended to marry in a place other
than Kalamazoo County.
We have abstracted the essential information from these
documents. The actual document may include further
data such as the name of the person performing the
ceremony, witnesses, birthplaces and occupations of
parents, whether persons had been previously married,
and nationality and race of the bride and groom.
Intents to Marry often had medical certificates
attached.
These documents can be examined at the Kalamazoo County
Clerk’s Office, however this office can not issue a
certified copy of any of the Foreign Marriage
Certificates. Certified copies will have to be requested
through the clerk of record (i.e., the place where the
marriage was actually performed). The place of an
Intended Marriages should be queried to see if a
marriage certificate is filed there.
We indexed the Foreign Marriage Certificates under the
groom’s name, bride’s maiden name, and bride’s married
name. The Intents to Marry were only indexed under
groom’s name and bride’s maiden name, since there was no
proof that the marriage actually occurred.
KVGS volunteers will abstract Foreign Marriages or
Intents to Marry for out-of-town researchers. Write to:
Kalamazoo County Clerk and Register of Deeds
Attn: Genealogy Volunteer
201 W Kalamazoo Ave
Kalamazoo, MI 49007
Please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope and do
not request more than two abstracts at a time.
