The Historical Society was established in 1972 in order to acquire and preserve a 1938 Milan Fire Truck. When it was formed it was decided to include the area around Milan that was not covered by other Historical Societies. This area includes parts of two counties, four townships, and 10 current or former Post Offices (some were small communites at one time).

The County of Washtenaw includes: York township with the the Post Offices of Mooreville (aka York), and Urania and the township of Augusta with the Post Offices of Stony Creek,   Whittaker and Willis (aka Potter, Newcomb).

The County of Monroe includes: Milan Township with the Post Offices of , Azalia (aka East Milan, Reeves Station) and Cone (aka West Milan) and the township of London with the Post Offices of Oakville (aka Readingville, Nelsonville) and London.

The City of Milan (aka Tolanville, Farmersville, Woodward's Mill) is split between the two counties and the townships of York and Milan.

Since being formed the Society has acquired the Hack House for a museum in Milan and the old Milan Fire Barn. It has also created a copyrighted logo - the old crooked tree that used to be at the north-west corner of County street and Dexter.
