On Friday, October 12, 1973, the Macomb County Genealogy Group (MCGG) began meeting in the auditorium of the Mount Clemens Public Library. Genealogists who used the excellent genealogy and local history collection of the library met to share their experiences and to help each other with their research. This informal trading of genealogical information and advice with special help to newcomers in genealogy has continued as 20 to 60 members have come together every other Friday afternoon year round for over 30 years.
The name Macomb County Genealogy Group was chosen to emphasize the fact that this organization would not be a "society" in the usual sense, there being no dues, no membership list, no by-laws, no minutes of meetings. Attend a meeting and automatically become a member. There are no officers. Though there is no organizational chart per se, there is no lack of leadership.
The Macomb County Genealogy Group began under the sponsorship of the Mount Clemens Public Library and has been able to continue because the library has provided a regular meeting place and support for our activities. MCGG has supported the library by our members acting as volunteers in the library's Michigan Room (which holds the genealogical and historical collections), by answering research letters for the library, by raising money to add to the library's genealogical and historical collection, and by creating guides to aid researchers in using the library's genealogical and historical resources.
