Evergreen Township
The settlements in Evergreen township, include Sheridan, and the South-East area of Stanton. The first settlers came in 1851.The first business was a sawmill owned by John W. Winson. The village was incorporated in 1877 and named after General Phillip H. Sheridan. The county seat was originally called Fred after Mr. Fred Hall of Ionia from whom 40 acres of land was purchased for the town. The price of the purchase was $50.00. In 1863, the village was renamed Stanton, after Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War.
