Being a Township Historian

All volunteer on-line township historians are welcome!

We need help, and we know that many people want to help. Being a township historian for the Montcalm MIGenWeb site can allow you to add to this web site and help others! If you would like to add information to a specific area of our county or your family were pioneers of a certain area, you may wish to become a township historian.

Being a township historian is very easy and a great way for you to help many people.

    Common Questions:

  1. Can a township have more than one historian? (YES!)
  2. Which townships currently have historians?
(Bloomer, Bushnell, Day, Eureka, Fairplains, Ferris, Home, Maple Valley, Sidney )
  3. Will my name appear on the township page? (YES!)
  4. Can I add information from old history books? (YES!) as long as they were printed before 1923 (see copyright laws link below)
  5. Can I add yearbook information? (probably not) See the link to Copyright laws below.
  6. Can I add information from newer books? (probably not)
Please be aware of: "COPYRIGHT LAWS"
  7. Will this co$t me anything? (NO!)
  8. Will I be required to spend a certain amount of time working on this project? (NO!) However, if you contribute nothing, your name may be removed from the page.
  9. If I write things, do I hold the copyright on it? (YES!)
  10. Am I required to have an email address? (YES)
  11. Will my email be protected from SPAM? (YES)
It's important to know that this web site only lists email addresses using a special JavaScript that does not allow people to use "Spider" type software and get your email address to add to SPAM lists, like they could if you just had your email address listed on a web page.
  12. Can I add information about living people? (probably not) These pages are for historical data only.
  13. Can I link to the family pages that people have put on the County site, that are from my township? (YES!)
  14. Can I link to cemetery pages on USGenWeb? (YES!)
  15. Can I lock-in as the ONLY historian of a township? (No)
  16. Will I have FTP access to update my own township page? (No) Page updates will be emailed to the site coordinator who will do actual updates.

    Rules to Follow:

  1. Try to let us know if your email address changes.
  2. Reply to people who contact you within a week. (if at all possible)
  3. get page updates to the site coordinator as soon as possible.
  4. Please do not insult or in any way SPAM people who contact you.
  5. Do not allow information that you gather for your township page to be used by "for-profit" agencies.
  6. Do not link to any pages that have a copyright or has infringed on any copyright laws.
