SOLDIERS OF
MONTCALM  COUNTY

Civil War

Montcalm County in the Civil War  Visit our new site!

11/30/2006

I am the Graves Registration Officer of the William A. Kent Camp No. 83, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) located in Greenville. One of our organization's purposes is to locate, record, and evaluate the condition of Civil War memorials - monuments, markers, plaques, etc. Our Camp is responsible for Montcalm County.

The Camp is collecting any information about the men who served from Montcalm County, as well as those who later located here. The hope is to find information about each soldier, the burial site of the soldier and visit the gravesite to review the condition of the grave marker. The soldier will then be identified in the state database, available for the public to research.

Also, we are attempting to locate and record Civil War memorials. We are interested in the history of the memorial (who or what group led the way in obtaining the memorial/when was it erected or dedicated/are there any stories or pictures of any ceremonies).

In addition to markers and memorials we are trying to locate any copies of GAR records as they are a valuable resource in identifying our local Civil War veterans.

Any help you can give will be appreciated!

Best Regards,
Gerry Christiansen, Graves Registration Officer
