Written Feb. 11, ’80. Clarence was very sick so that M
& O did not go to church. But we did go to S. S. (Sunday
School) and how we did enjoy it. My class did beautifully.
Was going to Temperance meeting but could not because Clarence was
so sick.
Monday, February 2, 1880
Written Feb. 11, ’80. Went to school, was almost sick all day.
Came at night and went to washing. Finished it about nine.
Studied a little and went to bed. I think it was a pleasant day but
am not quite positive.
Tuesday, February 3, 1880
Written Feb. 11. My poor diary has been greatly neglected.
I should have written this over a week ago. Wrote an application
for a Bucktown School. Stormy day, I believe. Staid (sic) after
school to our Society. Ironed when I got home.
Wednesday, February 4, 1880
I have felt better today . Came home to dinner, so did Mattie.
It has snowed nearly all day. We were examined this afternoon in
Grammar, don’t expect to pass. Cousin Addie begins to look
---- (sic).
Thursday, February 5, 1880
Written the 11th. A horrid, dirty, squally day. Jeanie
was not at school today, her little cousin is very sick and she stay at
home to do the work. Cousin C has been away a week today.
Clarence getting better. We are all so glad and thankful.
Friday, February 6, 1880
Written 11th. Snowed fast all day. School has gone pretty
well. Thect.(?) V. R’s. (?) read their paper today.
It was very good indeed. We spelled down, I missed on disolute (sic).
Jeanie’s cousin is dead. I am so sorry. He was an only
child.
Saturday, February 7, 1880
(Not in Susie’s handwriting.) Sue is sick and gone to bed.
So I must do her work. I went out calling this afternoon and Mrs.
Smalley called while I was away. It has been a lovely day.

11th. Mattie prepared the breakfast and I lay in bed.
Did not get up until after twelve. Mattie had to go to church
alone. Mrs. Piper taught my class. I enjoyed my quiet
Sunday very much, had time to read and think, which was a treat.
Monday, February 9, 1880
11th. Could not go to school because I had such a cold so I staid
(sic) home and washed. We had a letter from father. It did
me so much good. Cousin Kitt was here. He said

Tuesday, February 10, 1880
I have been to school today. My cold is (sic) but my (sic) whirls.
Mr. H. read our standing today. I was only 62, and
I was provoked at Mr. H. Mattie had toothache yesterday
but feels well tonight only she is tired.
Wednesday, February 11, 1880
A cold, rainy, windy day as the last day before examination is apt to
be. I am afraid I shall not pass but shall do my best. Cous(in).
K was here today. N & children are better.
A letter from Myra. M (Mattie) had one from Laura.
Am going to visit school tomorrow. Grace is teaching.
Thursday, February 12, 1880
I have not been to school today because it is examination week.
I did the work this morning and Cousin A went downtown. This
afternoon I visited M’s school and the water works.
The school was very (sic) but that engine was wonderful. Tomorrow
I am to the exam. I have felt happy today. My blues was on
account of want of faith and trust that I am getting right now.
Friday, February 13, 1880
The examinations are over. I only answered questions in Arith(metic)
because I didn’t have time in the other studies. I think I
shall stand pretty well. Cous(in). M and Mattie have
been here today. They are getting better. Aunt M. sent
Cousin
A some butter. Am I not glad? I am going happier
each day. Is it because I try harder or is it because Gods answering
my prayer. I think that is it. We had a letter from (sic) tonight.
I do enjoy the letters so much. A coldish, raw day.
Saturday, February 14, 1880
Feb 17. Cold, raw day. Made cookies, fried cakes in morning
and swept, mopped, washed dishes, and got dinner. Afternoon did up
work, dressed, called on Mrs. Smalley, went to Mr. Gustin’s
to [had such a nice time] in the evening studied S. S. lesson.

Feb 17. Mr. Ruddiman’s house was burned today. Ralph
Westervelt was buried today. Did not go to church but went to
S. S. Alie Frazee acted horridly. I wanted to cry.
Wrote to Georgie E. (probably her sister, Georgianna) and
Georgie
R. Read my Bible and went to bed.

Was a beautiful day. Mattie had a stomache (sic) and was
pretty sick. School went well. Washed after school. Was
very tired indeed.
Tuesday, February 17, 1880
Terribly windy. I have been very tired today and very “raw and
windy” like the weather. Stood 80 in grammar, Miss A. was
unable to look over the other papers. Disposed of 2 tickets, bought
one, sold other to Mattie. Good Night. Had a letter
from father he sent 2 journals. How much good his letters do us.
Wednesday, February 18, 1880
The sun rose as usual, though I did not see it. I went to school,
finished my part of the ironing. I fill up with this because I can
think of nothing else. Got up a little after five. Boys didn’t,
they were an hour late to breakfast.

Got up late, went to school. Mr. & Mrs James Whitney
were here all day. Went in the evening, enjoyed it hugely.
I think Mrs. Montgomery has the sweetest voice I ever heard.
Friday, February 20, 1880
A mixed (sic) of a day. School went much as usual. Miss
A was crosser than usual fury. Mr. C was cross too.
Went to lecture with M. K. C. L. Mrs. Livermore is
the best lecturer I ever heard. It was excellent.
Saturday, February 21, 1880
Busy as it always is but I am trying to be patient and scold the boys
are worry Mattie (sic). I studied Arithmetic till after seven.
Worked all the examples. I don’t understand them very well.

Arose, dressed, got breakfast as usual. M & I did up
the work, went to Church. Sermon was good, text 1 Cor(inthians).
2 Chap, 14 V. My class was just nice. Went to class, spent
the evening with Misses Bunn & Jackson.
Monday, February 23, 1880
I went to school. Washed after with the help of cousins Addie,Chancy
L & Clarence. A beautiful day. I was very much
provoked at Miss A but am trying to forget it and begin right again.
Tuesday, February 24, 1880
Rainy and uncomfortable day. Got my feet wet going to school in
the afternoon. Staid (sic) to Society. Ironed after I got home.
Cousin A. read a lecture to us after supper and then I studied
my lessons.
Wednesday, February 25, 1880
Rained the morning but was warm and lovely this afternoon. School
went well. Father is 60 years old today. How I wish M
& I could have been at home. I hope I am growing a better girl.
Thursday, February 26, 1880
A windy, rainy, hailey (sic) day. Went to school. At night
I stitched some sheets and finished the ironing and got supper. Studied
my lessons and retired.
Friday, February 27, 1880
Windy. Went to school. After school went to Pine St. for
M
and then we went to Mr Ford’s, had a nice time. Alice Hitchcock
was there. I think her a lovely girl.

Worked at housework until (sic) 4 P. M. M went to the church.
I studied till I went to sleep. Mrs. Collier called.
Rained nearly all the afternoon.

Cold & Stormy. Went to church. Text 1 Tim(othy).
I did not enjoy the sermon much. This has been a quiet and to me
a good day. I wish I knew some (‘thing’ crossed out) one here that
could tell just how feel. But I must go to Jesus as a little child.
