John Okemos became Chief Okemos. He was the chief of 
the Grand River Band of Chippawas.He fought in 
many wars and helped sign many treatys. He also 
had a son named johnny. He has a gravestone located 
south of portland and is about a half mile hike 
from a main road on state land in the oxbow of 
the grand river. It sits high atop the river and 
is a peaceful place and there is a rock tombstone 
donated my dof representing his longlife sleep. 
There is also and the cneteral elementry school 
in okemos, mi a marker that says "Erected 
to the memory of chief okemos whose tribe once 
occupied the grounds upon which this school stands 
brave in battle, wise in council
