Name: Celeste
E-Mail: Nanticoke9@aol.com
Location: Maryland
Comments: Searching for descendants of the NANTICOKE, DELAWARE/LENAPE, MUNCIE Indians. These tribes were forced to migrate west from their homelands in DE, NJ, PA and southern NY. There were several 'high' migration periods - mid-1700s and throughout the 1800s. Some descendants have been found; still searching for others. Surnames known to have migrated to MI include: CARNEY/CORNEY, COUNSELOR/COUNCILLOR, DRIGGUS/DRIGGETT/DRIGGERS, HANZER/HANSOR/HANDSOR, MILLER, NORWOOD, PERKINS, and SAMMONS/SALMONS/SIMONS. Some of these families migrated into Canada first and then into Michigan. Other possible surnames include: CLARK, COURSEY/CORSEY, DRAINE/DRANE, HARMON/HARMAN, HITCHENS, JACKSON, JOHNSON, MOSLEY/MOSELY/MOSELEY, STREET, and WRIGHT. Members of these families could have been absorbed by the dominant tribes in the area at the time, assimilated into the mainstream culture for that era, or continued their migration north or west.

If you suspect that you may have a familial connection to NANTICOKE, DELAWARE/LENAPE or MUNCIE Indian tribes, please feel free to contact me.

Mary wed Emile Paquin and it is said that at that time she gave up her indian status. We are trying to make the connection to her Indian bloodlines which we suspect to be on her mother's side (through the Jacques name) and of the Chippawa - Ottawa Tribe of northern Michigan. This theory comes form the location of the Paquin family near St. Ignace MI before returning to Ontario Canada about 1900. Any help would be appreciated.

(Tillie) WRINKLE. From what I have found, Tillie's maiden name was Wrinkle. Her mother was Mary MCPHAIL. Joseph H. Wrinkle married Mary (Sarah) McPhail & had, I believe, 12 children. Tillie is one of those children.

Would love to hear from you. The address on your query is old & no longer valid.

Do you know if Tillie had any Native ancestry?

Comments: I am the descendent of the BRADBY's (Pamunkey Tribe of the Powhatan Nation). During the Civil War my forefathers left Charles City, Va and it is said they lived among the Objibwa in Ontario (Chatham Township)around 1861. My great-great grandfather Henry Bradby fathered, Susan, Allen, Bolling (my great grandfather) and Porterfield. After the war Henry returned to Virginia with his children however his brother and sister may have remained in Canada. Are there any Bradby's still in Chatham or among the Objibwa ?... if so they are my ancestors and I'd love to hear from them. The Bradby excursion to Canada is an interesting fact in our history - smiliar to the "Trail of Tears".

Searching for info on Jean Baptiste Bonneau, born circa 1802 [before 1807] to Therese Cousineau {also listed as Therese Lecomte in Detroit, MI records} and a Native American man. Louis Bonneau dit Lacabesse [born 13 Nov 1761 Lachine, Quebec, Canada] adopted Jean Baptiste and gave him his surname of Bonneau probably at the time of his marriage to Therese on 28 Jan 1807 in St. Antoine River Raisin, Monroe County, Michigan. Therese had another son, Pierre, who died before 1807 in St. Antoine's. Would like to find out who was Jean's real father? Any help?

Comments: I am looking for any information I can get on a Sevellen Campbell who was married to Frances Marsman in the early part of the 1900's. I know they had at least two children, an Etta Mae and a Robert. I also know that Frances died early in the century and Sevellen died in Indiana. I also was told that Robert spent a few years in jail in Michigan and worked at a riding academy or stable in Columbus, Ohio for a time. My Aunt and Uncle (Mae's children) told me that they were of native background from the Grand Rapids region of Michigan and that the tribe stared with a P. I am assuming Potowatomi. If any of this is familiar to someone, please let me know.

Comments: I am searching for information about my paternal grandmother Harriet Leblanc who states she was born in Menominee, MI, June 6, 1891. Family history claims that Harriet was of Ojibwe descent and spent her early years in an orphanage in MI until she was sent east to Vermont to live with an Aunt and Uncle, Herman and Virginia Leblanc.I have not been able to find any birth records for Harriet. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Rita

I am searching for an ancester, assumed Potawatomie - male, born ca. 1840 last name in white society, Webster. First name may have been Carl. Married in Michigan, ca. 1865-70 to Theresa Murphy, perhaps in south central Michigan. Oldest child, Julia Webster, later Ramsdell, born 1870 in Kalamazoo county. No knowledge of Native American connection until 1943 when she told her granddaughter on dieing, so knowledge source was lost. Catholic church in Kalamazoo she attended as a child had a fire which burned the birth records.

Comments: I am searching for any information on my mothers side of the family. Her name is Martha Spoon. She is from Seine River First Nations in Fort Francis Ont. Her fathers name is Archie, and I know she has a sister named Margaret. My father won custody of myself and my other 5 sisters in the 70's, and raised us with his new wife. They are both white and didn't not tell us much about our native ancestry exept the horrible things they branded them with, they also branded us. Please if anyone has any info on my family it would be very greatly appreciated.

Monique

Comments: ULLMAN, ALLMAN, AUHLMAN, ALTMAN,ULMAN, ALMAN ETC. I am looking for information on my grandmother who was a fullblood Chippewa born in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. Her given name was Lottie. As you can see, I am not sure of the spelling of her surname. According to the Federal Census for 1920, she was born in 1896 and came to Americal in 1897 (Census records are not always correct). I assume that the family came to Detroit as it was so close to her place of birth. I contacted the vital records office in Ontario to request a birth record and was told that they could find none. My grandfather, Melvin Clair Jolliff, and my grandmother lived in Detroit, where my father George Melvin Jolliff was born in 1914. I have contacted the vital records office in Ontario and Michigan (State and Wayne, County) to request a marriage record but they could fine none. I have also tried the immigration records with no success. According to an Application for Social Security, my father's sister Della was born in Sarnia in 1916. My mother and father separated when I was 3 years old and we did not keep in contact with his family. The people that could give me information have passed away. Names that were mentioned to me in connection with my grandmother are Redhair Blumfield(sp?), Chief White Mustache, Johnnie Wakache (Wasacase?) and Sam Bologna. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Comments: I am in the process of trying to find out more about my distant relatives, and understand from a second cousin that there might be possible Indian ancestry in our family, something our grandmothers did not want to talk about, but that her mother believes to be true. I don't have much to go on, but I had a great grandfather named Eugene LaCroix, who was born in Canada around 1855 and became a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 1875 in Michigan, having moved to the U.S. around 1868. He married an Octavia or Octavie Jubinville ( or possibly Jimerfield or Jimmerfield), who born in Michigan around 1857, though her parents were supposedly from Canada. Their children were born in Michigan - Odille around 1878, Nellie around 1879, Elsie (my grandmother) around 1888, Ellen (my second counsin's grandmother)- 1891, and Joseph - 1893. Any help you might be able to offer would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
Larry Goss
