We are located in Baraga, with
meetings also taking place in Ishpeming/Marquette and occasionally other
western U.P towns. The chapter name, pronounced ona-go-ming-kway, is the
Ojibwa words for "Women by the lake" (see How
We Chose Our Chapter Name). We were officially organized on
May 7th 2005.
Our chapter is currently serving
the western half of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with the projects and
goals of the state and national society with special emphasis in working
with children in our local schools via the DAR good citizen program and chapter
scholarships opportunities, providing needed supplies & service for our
veterans in the D. J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans in Marquette, and preserving,
and recording the history of the men and women who lived in the Upper Peninsula.

Objectives of the Society:
Historic Preservation – to perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men
and women who achieved American Independence.
Promotion of Education – to carry out the injunction of Washington in
his farewell address to the American people, "to promote, as an objective
of primary importance, institutions for the general diffusion of knowledge,
thus developing an enlightened public opinion."
Patriotic Endeavor– to cherish, maintain and extend the institutions
of American freedom, to foster true patriotism and love of country, and to
aid in security for mankind all the blessings of liberty.
