RECOLLECTIONS BY AARON V. SWEENEY

Mary (Green) McSweeney

Although he was quite young he remembers that she was tall and always wore black. He was afraid of her because she looked scary. She lived with John and Elizabeth after her husband died.

John McSweeney: DEC 1863 - 3-3-1928

John used to bring himself and his brother Richard fishing in the McGinnis creek in the summer time even though everyone knew there wasn't any fish in that river in the summer time.

When Aaron was 5 years old he asked for a cup of coffee. John told the women to give him some, which he liked, and has been drinking since.

It was John who dropped the Mc off of McSweeney. Mc actually means "son of". His tombstone, however, had the Mc on it. He thought it was too long.

Eugene Richard Sweeney: 7-7-1893 - 12-31-1969

One time the family went to pick blueberries. He went with his Dad and Richard with his mother. His Dad took him to a place that sold blueberries for $1 a crate (16 qts./crate). They bought two crates and brought them home. Mother was surprised to see all the berries spread out over the table (they hid the crates). When asked, Dad stated they picked them. Noone was ever the wiser.

Aaron, Richard and their mother Ada were picking berries when Aaron was around 4 years old. They noticed that their father's grocery store in Sterlingville had caught fire. The store was destroyed. His father then went into farming. He bought an unused methodist church and lowered the roof, making a home out of it.

At one time on the farm they had 13 men staying in a bunk house across the road from their house.
