Russell Sawyer was born in Port Huron on May 3, 1907. Although he shadowed area photographers and took a photography course in Detroit, Mr. Sawyer was largely self-taught. It is due to his care and technique that these negatives are still available and viable. It is because of his passion, energy, and skill, that we can once again revisit the ships, street scenes, and faces of our area's past.

It is with immense gratitude that we acknowledge the Sawyer family, whose generosity has brought this wonderful collection back to our community. When Mr. Sawyer passed away in 1989, the family held an estate sale and much of his equipment and some of his negatives and prints were purchased. After much consideration and gentle coaxing, the family agreed to donate the remaining items to the museum on the condition that they be shared with the community and not merely put in storage.

The negatives in this collection are of various sizes, including 35mm, 120, 2" x 3," and 4" x 5." Using a negative scanner, the images have now been saved as digital .jpg files.
