Husband's Notes
================================================================================

Daniel Trott is not listed in the index of the 1845 State Census. This leads to the question of where was he in 1841 when his first daughter was born in Michigan as indicated in later census records?

The 1883 Port Huron & St. Clair County Directory shows that Daniel Trott was the owner of property in section 28 of Berlin Township, with a post office address in Berville.

Daniel died 7 December 1891 and is buried in West Berlin Cemetery, Allenton, MI. The stone monument is quite worn and the lettering difficult to read. It is between 5 and 6 feet in height with lettering on three of the four sides. Daniel's name and date is on the west side of the stone. On the north side, Louisa's data is extremely difficult to read. The south side is the least
weathered and it holds the names and dates of their grandchildren, Carrie and Harvey, who are buried to that side of the marker.

Letter from West Berlin Sexton states that Daniel died 6 Feb 1891 at age 81

Daniel most likely met and married Louisa Shoesmith while her family was living in Pittsford, Monroe Co., NY. He apparently had a brother who remained in the Rochester, NY, area and became quite well off. This brother visited Michigan once, as my mother's first cousin, Donna Cutcher Neumeyer, related her mother's story of the visit. Later, a cousin 'Queenie', whose given name may have been Victoria, visited also. (1, 3, 12, 13, 14)

================================================================================
Wife's Notes
================================================================================

Louisa was the daughter of John Shoesmith, b. 1782, d. 1873, and Lois Waklin, b. 1790, d. 1874.

At the West Berlin Cemetery, there is a line of Shoesmith graves just to the east of the Trott sites. In this line are Lois Shoesmith, d. 31 Aug 1871, age 84 years; James Shoesmith, d. 21 Jan 1856, age 26 yrs, 8 months; Samuel Shoesmith d. 3 June 1852, 26 yr, 1 month 14 days; Caroline, Wife of John Shoesmith, d. 7 Sept 1853, 31 yr, 10 m, 1 d.,; Evelia Shoesmith, d. 25 Aug 1859, 3yr 9d.

The census records show that Louisa was born in England, the country from which the Shoesmith's emmigrated between 1829 and 1836. The possible span of the trip is limited by the birth of the family's youngest son in England in 1829 and the birth of the youngest daughter in Monroe Co.. NY in 1836. (Information gleaned from the LDS Vital Records CDs - new data from a family letter below). Further research shows that the Shoesmiths owned land in adjoining Almont Twp., Lapeer County during the same period that Daniel and Louisa were living in Berlin Twp, St. Clair County. There is no death record on file in St. Clair
County for Louisa.

The date on Louisa's tombstone is difficult to read, but it appears to be 1879 but if so, her death should be recorded in the Michigan On-line Death Index and it is not [however there is a death record indexed in St. Clair County - St. Clair Co. Death Index: Trott Louisa Book 1 P. 198]. Her name and date are on the north side of the Trott stone, Daniel is on the west side and the two grandchildren who died young are listed on the south side which is the least worn and easiest to read. When the St. Clair Historical Society 'read' the cemetery, they failed to find Louisa's data on the marker so she is not listed in their publication. The West Berlin Sexton states that she died at age 62.

>From a letter sent by an unknown grandchild of Louisa to a relative in 1937. Rec'd 25 Jun 1999 from Mark Shoesmith.

Notes on Family History - August 1937
Great grandfather John Shoesmith and Lois, his wife came from Sussex, England in March 1824 (not certain of date) with seven of their eight children, Martha, the youngest was born in this country. MY grandmother, Louisa, had been working in London, England previous to their embarking on the sailing vessel which was six weeks in crossing. They settled in New
York State for a time before moving to Michigan in 1844. They settled on a farm in Almont Township, Lapeer County. The house he built still stands today and the farm is now owned by foreigners. The children were John, Stephen, Samuel, who was killed by a falling tree in June 1852 when he was age 26, James, who was injured in a wrestling match and died January 1856, aged 26 years, Selina, Mary Ann and Martha.

The father, mother, James , Samuel, Louisa, and some of their descendants are buried in the West Berlin Cemetery. Great Grandfather John, was 91 when he died May 31, 1873. Lois, his wife, was 87, dying August 31, 1874. I have their pictures seated together. He with a book in his hand, both very old. I also have a calf-bound volume (sort of a religious journal) presented to him by his "Aunt Davies" December 23, 1835. The name Diplock appears on the fly leaf of another old book which Hattie Bowen Reid has. She also has samples worked by Selina in 1833. An old bead chain was given to Selina by her cousin, Abel Sties. Hattie also has a small fancy trinket box marked "1814".

I have a copy of an Acrostic written by Great Grandfather for Salina on her birthday, March 31, 1842, when they lived at Pittsford, NY. It is beautifully written and the sentiment and working very fine. The first letters of each line spells his name and the word Pittsford.

Hattie has the original.

[This letter is unsigned, but from the wording makes it doubtful that it was from any of Franklin Trott's children as they would have most likely named him as being buried in West Berlin Cemetery instead of using the phrase 'and some of their descendants'] (15)

> William POWERS
> St Clair County, Michigan
> Book # 6, Page 18
> Date of death: Dec 25, 1923 Would make birth date 20 May 1844
> Male/White/Widower
> 79yr/7months/5days
> Place of death: Berlin Twp.
> Cause of death: Pneumonia
> Birthplace: Kingston, Canada
> Occupation: Farmer
> Parents: John Powers resid: VT
>Elizabeth Gilbert resid: unknown < I wonder if this is supposed to be Nancy??
I know that John was born in Vermont, or could John have possibly been married to a sister of Nancy's first? They don't show up in Berlin Twp. until the 1870 census and there seems to be a wide span between the ages of the children.. Emma was only 14 in 1870 and the older son John must have been 30 as he was 40 in the 1880 census.

>From Robert & Betty Miller:
William, born 1844. He married Mary Sullivan (1852 to 1917) Both are buried in East Berlin Cemetery. They had a daughter, Jessie and a son, Jacob. Jacob md. Ella ___ and had a daugher Hazel. Hazel md. ___ Wills and had a dau. Lea.

In her letter of 13 Jun 1997, Nancy (Powers) Brown speeks of talking with a "cousin" in Capac whose father was Nancy's mother's brother (and thus a Wills) and whose mother, Hazel, was a Powers. She says the cousin's grandfather was a
Jake Powers. Thus it appears that 'Jake' is the Jacob Powers who was the son of William Powers and a grandson of John Powers & Nancy Gilbert. The cousnin's mother, Hazel, would then have been a daughter of Jacob Powers and wife Ella
____. (8, 11)
