A Grant Pioneer Gone

Mrs Martha Peckham Merchant died at her home in Grant one and one half miles east of Blaine on March 21.  The funeral was held from the home this afternoon.  Mrs Merchant was born near Rochester, N.Y. in 1827  She came to Michigan in 1844, and for a few years taught school near Armada, where she became acquainted with Dennis D. Merchant to whom she was united in marriage in September 1848.  They at once moved to the farm which ever since has been her home for nearly 54 years.  The couple came by boat to Lakeport, then a small hamlet in the woods.  The only road to their late home at that early day was a sled road through the woods.  Together with her husband, who died in 1886, they built themselves a home and cleared and improved a fine farm of 240 acres.  Six children were born to them, five of which yet survive.  Frank Merchant of Petoskey; J.N. Merchant of Chelsea; Mrs I. M. Quinn of Battle Creek, and Charles and Fred Merchant of Grant, all of which were present at the funeral.  Mrs Merchant joined the church at 16 years of age and endevored to live as a Christian throughout her life.

Mrs Dennis Merchant, a pioneer resident of Grant township dird on Friday, aged 74 years.  The funeral will be held on Monday afternoon.
