HALVORSON/ANDERSON/HEDMAN
Looking for links in the Storden, Windom, Deerfield areas for these names. My GrGrandparents were Peter J. HALVORSON and Mathilda ANDERSON HALVORSON. Peter had sisters Gena and Christina and another (first name unknown) who married a man surnamed LARSON and lived in Canada. Peter was born in 1866 in Deerfield. He and Mathilda ANDERSON had 6 children: Myrtle, Thelma, Violet, John, an infant son who died at birth, and my grandmother Jessie who married Antone (Tony) HAMPTON here in Washington. Mathilda Anderson HALVORSON had a brother named Henry who had quite a large family in the Windom area. I believe many 'cousins' still live near there. Some of Henry's children where Nels, Richard, Willy, Agnes. (there are several others!) My mother has visited her cousins there several times and Richard died this last summer, I believe. Dan HEDMAN was married to one of Peter HALVORSON's sisters, Christina. He, too, was from Storden. All of these folks came to Washington State, to a small town called Wenatchee, sometime @1900. They were pioneer families in the Squilchuck Creek area. If any of this sounds familiar, please contact me!

HORTON,Dillie
I know this is a long shot but I will give you the information I have. I have an old note from a relative that has passed on. The note lists the name Dillie Horton April 19, 1871 and under it was written Jeffers Minn. If the April 19, 1871 is a birth date I have a match with a Salathiel D. Horton who was my husband's Great-great-grandmother's brother. He was born in Montgomery Co. Iowa. I do not have any more information on him so maybe Jeffers was a death location or at a residence. I wish this person would have written better notes. I guess my question is, do you have a Salsthiel D. or a Dillie Horton
buried in Cottonwood Co? Any leads would be GREAT!!!!

JOHNSON,Andrew and Margaretha
I'm looking for more information about my great great grandparents: Andrew and Margaretha JOHNSON. I found them in the 1870 cenus in Belmont Township, Jackson Co., MN in 1870:
Andrew 52 born in Norway (birth date 1819)
Marg 53 born in Norway - (also called Margaretha in 1875, Margaretta in 1880, & Maggie in 1895)
also on 1870 census:
Jacob 12 born in Dane Co., Madison, WI
James 11 born in Dane Co., Madison, WI
Betsy 8 born in WI
Obit in Windom Reporter for Andrew died 7/9/1892; (birth date 1819-according to math from death record). Death record at court house shows Andrew JOHNSON, died 7/9/1892 at age 73, birth place Norway, cause of death - drowning.
Does anyone have more info on them? When Margaretha died & where? Where are they buried?
When did they immigrate to WI? When were they married? Where in Norway are they from?

JOHNSON,Andrew and Martha
Looking for any additional connections to; Andrew JOHNSON b.1818 in Norway died July 9, 1892 in Windom. "An Andrew Johnson drowned in DesMoines River in 9th of July 1892" This person lived in the old creamery down by the river. Death record gave only basic information. Also his wife... Martha JOHNSON... born about 1812 in Norway, died April 2, 1896. "obituary Mrs. Koren Johnson died Monday morning she was 84 year old." I have the obituary and I have checked the death record. In 1870, the family was living in Belmont Township - Jackson County. I do know they moved to Windom sometime before 1887. The 1870 census shows Andrew, Mart..., Jacob, James and Betsy (my great grandmother). My dad remembers visiting relatives that owned a motel just off the square on what is now Highway 60/71. Also that an Andy Johnson who drove a grocery truck in Windom in the 1929-1930 era was related. There was a Johnson relative that Dad remembers visiting as a child that lived southeast of Highway 62/71 corner by the river. Also that there was some connection to the CARBINE family. Any help would be appreciated.

LOHRE
John Henry LOHRE came to the US at age 6-9 with an uncle, possibly named Halvor or Halver LOHRE. John was born March 15, 1862. John LOHRE's wifes name was Ostina, born August 5, 1859. I do not know her surname or her birthplace. They were in the Highwater Township--Westbrook---Storden----Lamberton area about 1870-1889. My grandmother Ida Sigrid LOHRE JOHNSON was born in that area October 3, 1889. In 1889 the family moved to Roseau County, but the uncle and other relatives stayed in Cottonwood County, I think. Ida had brothers, Joseph Eston LOHRE, George Henry LOHRE born Feb. 24, 1888, and sisters Mabel Edna, Maria Ann and Lulu Ella. Only Ida and George were born in Cottonwood Co. Also, family history has always maintained that in Norway the family was HENSON but changed to LOHRE in the US. I found a Nils (Nels) LOHRE that passed away in Storden about 1967? If anyone has information on any LOHRE's I would like to hear from you. Thank you!

OSTENSON/LOHRE
I am looking for Gilbert and Ingrid OSTENSON, and their daughter Ostine. The elder OSTENSON's were from Norway, Ingrid being from Oyan farm. Ostine was born in Wisconsin in 1860. The earliest I place the family in Cottonwood County is on the 1880 census of Norwegians living there. In 1885 Gilbert staked his land claim. Ostine married John Hanson LOHRE at, I believe, Westbrook Church, Highwater Township, in 1887. Anne OSTENSON was a witness, and I believe she was Ostene's sister. In the 1880 census, Anne was 17, and is listed as living in Windom as a domestic helper with the MONSON family. I am also looking for information on Esten Erickson LOHRE, who also homesteaded in the same area of Cottonwood County, in 1881. He was the uncle John H. LOHRE came from Norway with, not Halvor as I thought when I posted for LOHRE.

OIEN/OYEN
I am searching for information on where my Grandfather lived while he was in the USA. Born 1872 in Ytre Rendal, Norway. Sailed from Kristiania (Oslo) Dec 4, 1891 en route to New York, and arrived there on December 21/1891. His brother Andreas was also in the USA during the same period. Andreas became known as Andrew OYEN and lived in Crookston, MN in 1900. We found him on the 1900 US Census and also determined that he aquired land both around Crookston and also near Duluth. He also became a US citizen prior to 1905. Melkor's birth records list him as Melkor Gurenus ANDERSEN. His departure from Norway lists him as Melkior A. ØIEN. Andreas went by the name Andrew, and stayed in the US until 1909, when he walked to what is now Oyen, Alberta in Canada from Spokane Washington. Crossing into Canada seems to have changed the last name to OYEN from the OIEN spelling used in the US. Melkor and Andrew also had an older brother Gustav, born in 1867, who may also have traveled with them. Gustav is thought to have lived and died in the Chicago area. They all departed Norway at different times, as far as I know. Melkor returned to Norway in 1906 or 1907 and married Bertine BOLSTAD, the sister of his brother Simon's wife Synøve. In 1910, he went to Canada where he became Melcor (Mike) OYEN/OIEN. If anyone knows their whereabouts of any of these three brother during the 1890's until 1909 (the time period when they were in the USA), I would be very grateful for the information. I can be reached at
sandy@cumberford.com or at oyen@shaw.ca Thanks, Sandy Oyen-Cumberford. 19 Feb 2004 (Updated 30 Jan 2006)

PEDERSON/PEDERSEN
Researching my grandfather, Carl Frederick PEDERSON, born in late 1912/early 1913. He listed Westbrook, Cottonwood County, MN as his birthplace on my father's birth certificate. Family folklore is that Carl's father's name was Marinus PEDERSEN who emigrated to the US from Denmark. There are stories that Marinus may have been in the Danish Royal Guard before emigrating. Since all involved parties have passed away, any information would be greatly appreciated.

PRATT(Smith),George Franklin
Hi my name is Linda Shurtleff. I live in Spokane, WA. In 1878 there was a murder in Windom. George Franklin PRATT (SMITH) was murdered by his 2 brother-in-laws and his father-in-law. I am in touch with George’s gr. gr. gr. Grandson, Glenn PRATT, who lives in CA. The man who was involved in this shooting was my gr. gr. gr. Grandfather, Chauncey Wellington GREENMAN. We both have some questions about the events. We both have the newspaper clippings of the trial, but nothing before the trial. Were there articles written about when he was found out to PRATT and not SMITH? Was there anything said about where he came from? Or who his parents or family members were? (We have the info on Adelia and the children). We are just stuck. The name PRATT is very common in the US and there are too many George PRATT’s to be able to get a handle on where he lived before coming to MN. The other questions we have involve the incident that put PRATT aka SMITH, in jail the first time. Was there anything written about where he was jailed or imprisoned? Or why he was jailed? We thought maybe he got into trouble in IL or MN. It’s just too hard to do research from where we live. We’ll be happy to pay you for any expenses and copies. Please let us know what we need to do. Thank you, Linda

My greatgrandparents, Oscar W (1865-1961) and Laura M (Nielsen)(1870-1931) RENQUIST, are both buried in Lakeview Cemetery in Windom, as is their son Walfred (my great uncle). SCHWEIGER
Bertha GRAMLOW m. to ? SCHWEIGER - my grandfather Albert Friedrich Wilhelm GRAMLOW lived in Mountain Lake from 1894-1902, perhaps working as lumberjack? He was 22-30 during this period, unmarried. His sister, Bertha, married a man named ? SCHWEIGER; date of marriage unknown, however it had to be not long before Mar. 21, 1901, when she died at the age of 20 3/4 yrs. I have reasons to believe that the marriage may have taken place in Mountain Lake - and that she may also have died in that area.. She is buried at her Dodge County, WI, home but they have no records or evidence of her marriage or death there. When a robust looking young lady dies at age 20, shortly after her marriage - there has to be a story! Wedding pictures may have been taken by H. F. TOEVS (?) photographer of Mountain Lake, MN. Can anyone help me track it down or advise if there are historical groups in the area I could turn to for help!! Thank you from
