Crow Wing County Cemetery Information

Minnesota Genealogical Society Cemetery Project

"The Minnesota Cemetery Project is an ambitious plan to create a fully searchable
master list of all cemeteries in the state of Minnesota as well as a statewide inventory
of available cemetery resources such as transcriptions and indexes."

The Crow Wing County Genealogical Society participated in this effort, and our research results are available here:

*Crow Wing County Cemetery Directory (200 KB page)
*Crow Wing County Cemetery Transcriptions (100 KB page)
*Crow Wing County Cemetery Map (Google Map)

The Crow Wing County survey results are available in hard-copy form at the Minnesota Genealogical Society Library.

Evergreen Cemetery

The largest cemetery in Crow Wing County is Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd (not to be confused with a much smaller Evergreen Cemetery in Center Township). It has over 17,000 burials - several times more than all other Crow Wing cemeteries combined.

The Evergreen Cemetery Association Secretary is computerizing a new burial records index. When completed (perhaps by 2007/2008) this index will be available for browsing (and possibly for searching).

More information is available on the Evergreen Cemetery Home Page hosted here at this website.

"Cemetery Records of Crow Wing County, Minnesota"

This is a wonderful book by Earl C. and Laura L. Leslie listing the names on all the grave markers in all Crow Wing County cemeteries as of about 1979 (except for Evergreen, which would have made the book 3 times as big). It's available at the Brainerd Public Library (but not for check-out), at the Crow Wing County Historical Society in Brainerd, and at the Minnesota Historical Society in St. Paul.

In the late 1970's, the Leslies co-ordinated an effort to walk these cemeteries and record the names, dates, and other pertinent information (such as war service) that were visible on the markers in each cemetery. This information is grouped by cemetery, with an index in the back listing surnames in alphabetical order and the page(s) where individuals with those surnames are listed. Directions for getting to each cemetery are included. It's current through about 1979, which is when they completed the survey.
