Pardon our dust while the Dakota County website is undergoing a renovation.

Dakota County is named for the Native American Dakota people. "Dakota" best translates into "The Friends".

Dakota County is located in the southern part of the Saint Paul & Minneapolis metropolitan area and is one of the original 9 counties of the Minnesota Territory of 1849. At first, Dakotah County, later Dakota, stretched from the Mississippi to Missouri rivers. The county was greatly reduced a few times before Minnesota statehood (1858) to about its present day size.

MNGenWeb Project - USGenWeb Project

In March and April 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Genealogy Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they would be located in the index. This led to the USGenWeb of which Minnesota is a part. Volunteers are needed who are willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page. If you would like to host an available Minnesota county, please contact the MNGenWeb State Coordinator.
