Dakota County is named for the Native American Dakota people. "Dakota" best translates into "The Friends".
Dakota County is located in the southern part of the Saint Paul & Minneapolis metropolitan area and is one of the original 9 counties of the Minnesota Territory of 1849.
At first, Dakotah County, later Dakota, stretched from the Mississippi to Missouri rivers. The county was greatly reduced a few times before Minnesota statehood (1858) to
about its present day size.
