Verna was born in the Becida area in Fern Township.  She was the great-granddaughter of Becida pioneer Engebret Haugan and the daughter of Fred and Anna Barr who lived most of their lives in the area.  Verna was educated locally and in 1942, she graduated from Bemidji State College.  She had a career in school teaching, principally in Rockford, Illinois.  After retirement, she re-located to Phoenix, Arizona.
