Josiah Edson Chapter
Northfield, Minnesota

HISTORY

The National Society, Daughters of the American Resolution was organized on October 11th, 1890, in Washington, D.C.  Eighteen women became charter members of the society whose sole purpose was to perpetuate the memory of patriots whose courage and zeal helped this country achieve its independence during the Revolutionary War.

In 1895, the society was organized in Minnesota with 3 chapters in St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Duluth.   In 1898, chapters were organized in several smaller towns including Charter Oak Chapter in Faribault. It started with 12 members but grew quickly and soon a chapter in Northfield became necessary. On July 15, 1905, the first meeting of the Josiah Edson Chapter was held. Mrs. Martha A. Edson Bronson, a transfer from Charter Oak Chapter, became chapter regent and was instrumental in organizing this new chapter. The name Josiah Edson was chosen to honor Mrs. Bronson's great grandfather and Revolutionary War veteran, Sergeant Josiah Edson.  By 1959, Charter Oak Chapter disbanded and merged with Josiah Edson.

The Josiah Edson Chapter began with 18 members and has had as many as 76 in recent years. Currently, membership is at 76 with average meeting attendance of 20 members. Throughout the years, our members have sold or given out US flags, held flag burning ceremonies, assisting in laying of wreaths during memorial services, held genealogy classes, given out Good Citizen awards to high school students, and DAR medals to ROTC students, volunteered at VA centers, provided money and goods to DAR sponsored schools, sponsored American history essay contests in junior and senior high schools and many other projects in support of education, historic preservation, and patriotism.

Our members are mothers, grandmothers, school teachers, nurses, business women, social workers, ministers, veterans, and so much more. Our common thread is that we believe in God, love this country and all it stands for, and believe in preserving our country's history and securing our country's future through better education for our children.
