ST. JOHN'S LUTHERAN CEMETERY

CAMERON TOWNSHIP

In 1891 a group of Cameron Township residents decided to build their own church. Two acres of land in the northwest corner of Section 25 was obtained. Included here was a part set aside for a cemetery.

The first couple married in the original church was Gus Ziemann and Minnie Dettmer. Soon after this, a small tornado moved through the area and scattered the church over the prairie. A second church was built in 1893. The first couple married in this church was William Helmke and Lena Dettmer. Again a high wind hit the area and blew down the church. In 1897 the German congregation rebuilt the church four miles east, northwest corner of Section 27 in Lowville Township.

The cemetery continued to be maintained in the original sight.

In 1962, with the small membership, shortage of pastors and other economic factor, the members voted to disband and transfer their membership to other area churches. Before they disbanded, the church property was sold and the money put into perpetual care fund. The members of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lake Wilson voted to assume responsibility and care of the cemetery and perpetual care fund.
