A Publication of the Norman County Genealogy Society
Vol. 3 Issue 2
August 2000

The next meeting of the Norman County Genealogy Society will be on Thursday, August 17th. Please note that the meeting will be in the form of a potluck picnic at 6:30 p.m. at the Heritage Center in Twin Valley. Members, along with their families and friends, are invited to participate in an evening of food, fun, and fellowship. The following items will be provided: hotdogs, lemonade, coffee, paper plates, cups, napkins and eating utensils. Each member is asked to bring a dish to pass. Roger Niebeling will bring his grill. The Heritage Center will be open for us so we can browse through their exhibits.

Our local genealogy society web site was established in 1997. Since that time, we have received about 250 genealogical inquiries. Some of the queries have been answered, but many have not been answered because of lack of volunteer time. Deb Jacobson and Iris Duklet have compiled a hard copy of the queries in a ring binder. They have also compiled a second ring binder of queries which have been answered. Those two ring binders have been left at the Ada Public Library. If you have the opportunity, please look through the unanswered queries. Perhaps you could pick one query and try to locate information on that individual's history. If you don't feel comfortable posting an answer to the query on the internet, feel free to give your information to someone at a genealogy society meeting who will post the answer on the query board. We need to help others fine the link to their past.

Deb and Iris have also been busy this summer creating a data base of all the baptisms recorded at Halstad Lutheran Church. When complete, one copy will be available at the church and another copy at the Ada Public Library. That will save a lot of wear and tear on the old original church books. They have also been walking the South Cemetery in Halstad in an effort to update the cemetery records.

Work continues on the indexing of Norman County death records. Summer gets busy for all of us, but perhaps you would like to volunteer to help with this project. Please call Iris Duklet at 456-2312.

Deb Jacobson donated to the genealogy society a book entitled Netting Your Ancestors (Genealogical Research on the Internet) written by Cyndi Howells. It is available in the genealogy section at the library.

It is requested that all Norman County Genealogy Society members complete a pedigree chart to be kept on file at the Ada Public Library. You may give your chart (or a complete family history, if you have one) to Iris Duklet at one of the monthly meetings, or you may mail your information to Iris at P.O. Box 201, Halstad, MN 56548.

Norman County Historical Society volunteers continue their work at the new Red River History Museum in Shelly. Roland Carpenter is in charge of the genealogy room in the museum. The genealogy society is purchasing several new publications which will be available in the genealogy room at the museum to aid in researching your family history. They are:

O. J. Hanson Funeral Home Records Index (1920-1956)
4,683 Names Pub. 1993/Fargo, Cass County, ND

From the Red River Valley Genealogy Society, Cemetery books:

City of Ada, MN (Norman Co.) Vol. 4
Norman County (East of MN Hwy 9) Vol. 5
Norman County (West of MN Hwy 9) Vol. 6
Trail Co. 1980 (Vol.5)

Norman County West high school has contacted the genealogy society about conducting another class in beginning genealogy this fall. Interest has been shown in obtaining basic information on how to get started tracing family history and using the computer to research ancestry on the internet. Last fall's classes were well attended, and it is anticipated we will do something similar later this fall.

Anyone interested in genealogy is invited to our monthly meetings. We meet at the Ada Public Library the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Family membership in the society is $10 per year, which also provides membership in the Norman County Historical Society. Persons who live out of the area can become associate members for $5 per year. Please mail your membership check to Ardis Horn at Apt. 202, 100 First Street East, Ada, Minnesota 56510.

As of June 30, 2000, the treasure's reported a checkbook balance of $653.48. A big hearty Thank You goes to all who have paid their membership dues for the year 2000 and to all who have made donations to the genealogy society. THANK YOU also to the members who have volunteered hundreds of hours working on our various projects. (Additional help is always welcome).
