A Publication of the Norman County
Genealogy Society The next meeting of the Norman County Genealogy Society will be on August 19th. Please note that the meeting will be in the form of a potluck picnic at 6:30 p.m. at the Shelly city park. Members, along with their families and friends, are invited to attend an evening of food, fun, and fellowship. The following items will be provided: hotdogs, Kool-Aid, coffee, paper plates, cups, napkins and eating utensils. Each member is asked to bring a dish to pass. Roger will bring his grill. We hope to be able to sneak a peek at the Historical Society museum which is being created from the old school building in Shelly.
Work progresses slowly but surely on the projects we have undertaken. Several of the members have very faithfully been working at indexing Court House records. All the Norman County death records (through 1981) have now been put into a computer data base. Work continues on indexing the Norman County marriage records--up to the year 1920 at last report. Work is also being done on updating the cemetery records. Volunteers are always needed!
Colleen would like old church histories which she can put on our Web site. She is especially interested in old confirmation class rosters. Each member is also asked to submit a pedigree sheet to be held on file at the Adam Public Library.
We are still planning to have a community education class this fall for those interested in beginning genealogical studies. The instruction would include learning to "surf the net" to research family history.
Many books are available at the Ada Public Library to aid in researching your family history. The library also has microfilm of the county newspapers and the Minnesota Census Roll, in addition to several 3 ring- binders containing copies of US Census forms, information on Norwegian genealogy, maps of Norway, blank data worksheets, ancestor sheets, pedigree sheets, etc. You may make copies of the forms at the library for a small fee.
At our June meeting, the treasurer reported a checkbook balance of $318.48.
Following is our membership list. I apologize in advance if I've omitted anyone. If there are any additions or corrections, please let me know.
Officers for 1999 are Roland Carpenter, president; Sharon Larson, vice-president; and Ardis Horn, secretary-treasurer. If you know of other individuals who may be interested in joining our group, please invite them to join us for the potluck picnic at the Shelly park. Sharon Larson |
