I am looking for information about my Great-Grandfather, Ole G. Olson. He was married to Emma Henrietta Gunderson, and they had 9 children. The youngest child was my Grandmother, Evelyn Bernice Olson, b. 1919. Ole was "President" the Porter Bank in Porter, MN in the 1920's and 1930's. Does anyone have information about him and his family? I know that his father was born in Norway and came here as a child. At least, that's what I was told second or third hand.

This site looks great. Look forward to more data added in the future.

Ron Sykes Nov 29, 1997 at 00:06

Just stopped by to see what is happening in Pope Co. Thanks for letting me know you took over. Good Luck. I am looking for decendants of Knudt (Thrasher Knudt) OLSON and his wife Mari Hanson OLSON. 15 children, but many died young. Moved to SK Canada and both are buried there. They lived in Terrace, and I believe that some of the childre are there also, but haven't found out much yet.

Vicki Steen Jan 13, 1998 at 19:57

I have a lot of relatives from this area. Steen's are actually Stoa, Embretson, etc., married into the Olson's, Anderson's, etc. Feel free to contact me for more information. They were in Farwell in the early 1900's and late 1800's. Vicki

Hi from North Carolina..glad to see the Minnesota updates. Interested in census records, geneology databases to trace ancesters that settled first in Pope County (Starbuck) then in Bottineau County, North Dakota. Thanks....keep up the good work..it looks great!

Sandra LaCroix Jan 28, 1998 at 23:57

Keith, I just learned about GenWeb - what exciting possibilities! Keep up the good work. Would love to see old vital records indexes. And a quick question for you. If I write to Pope Co. for a death record, but only have the year narrowed down to an eight year span, should I include an extra $ amount for the search? Also do you know what the ZIP for Glenwood is? Thanks, will visit again.

keith Jan 29, 1998 at 10:18

Just a test

Mary Smith Feb 5, 1998 at 23:55

Thank you for referring a query to me regarding Ruth Babb; I found the death date the person was looking for but no obit. Could you correct the spelling of Query in your box with the blue background? It says Quary? I am the new CC for Douglas County and hopefully our site will be functional within a couple of days. I am sure there will be significant growing pains as we try to establish our "identity" but am looking forward to it. Good luck with the Pope County site. Pope Co. does not have a genealogical society although some of our Douglas County GS members do live in Glenwood and help with research from time to time. Mary

Len Kaimi Feb 13, 1998 at 12:04

Interesting and informative site.

Janni Belgum Feb 18, 1998 at 00:18

My father's parents were married in Pope County just before the turn of the century: Edna Torgerson & Olaf Belgum. While I know quite a bit about the Belgum side, I know practically nothing about my grandmother and her family. I do have her parents pictures and their names: Knute and Isabel Torgerson. Would anyone be able to give me some more information on them? My father, Knute Belgum, was born in Farwell, I believe: June 12, 1912. Janni Belgum, Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Kathie Mauzey Feb 20, 1998 at 19:00

Enjoyed looking through county information. Will submit query for my Pope Co. ancestors.

Scott Bringen Mar 15, 1998 at 22:42

Most of my relatives lived in McLeod Co., but I've come across an Ole L. Bringen who owned land in Pope Co. I thought I'd stop by and have a look. Thanks for the Minnesota Atlas .jpg! I downloaded it and will use it for future reference. Keep up the good work, Scott Bringen

Very nice page. Glenwood is my birthplace and where I grew up. Hope to get back there this summer for a family reunion. Beautiful country. This page is going to grow as family gen files are added. Good luck.

Terry Yackley Busch Mar 29, 1998 at 18:23

Thanks for the time that I know you have to put into this. If you get a chance, check out the DuPage County, IL, pages. They have the most complete and useful county that I have seen yet. Particularly helpful are their lists from the county cemetaries. Thanks again!

Bruce Harmon Apr 7, 1998 at 10:54

My great-great-grandfather was Jacob Harmon, who is listed as a Pope County Civil War veteran. Jacob came to Grove Lake, Pope County, with his family immediately after the war. He was in a militia unit in Missouri during the war. Born in Dubois County, Indiana. I have considerably more information on the family, if anyone is interested. Would like to find information on the Pixley family, as my great-grandfather William Thomas Harmon, married Weltha Pixley. I would like to see if there is a way of finding where Jacob and others of my family are buried.

Sara Brainard Jun 4, 1998 at 10:43

My Grandparents were Carlton & Helen (Wollan) Brainard.Anyone with info,stories,relatives,ect....PLEASE e-mail me ! Thanks and good luck to this site!

Gene Estensen Jul 9, 1998 at 21:48

He was born "in a railroad shanty" near Galena, IL as his parents came to Minnesota Territory from Tinn, Telemark, Norway. He was born Jon Olsen Bšen but in Cyrus, MN he was know as John Estensen. His younger brother, ¯stein Olsen Bšen (Austin Estensen) followed him to Minnesota in 1901. Austin's son, in turn, was Austin Alvin Estensen and he was my grandfather. I have this family tree back to the 1500s in Tinn. Any family out there? Gene Estensen

Robert L. Smith Jul 11, 1998 at 10:01

We visited Lake Amelia Cemetery where my ancestors are buried. Alfred and Vina Johnson. Also viewed many old houses which I compared to the photos of Villard taken in about 1910. Also saw the same grain elevator that my grandfather Rol Leslie Smith operated in the early 1920s. There was a RR strike which put him out of business. The old train station is still there bu the RR tracks are gone. I viewed the old cannon which I had not seen since 1940 when a picture was taken of my father, great grandfather, and myself.

Thank you for creating this site. I am interested in the Third Minnesota Volunteer Infantry. I found you list interesting inasmuch as most of the persons from the Third thereon enlisted from southeat Minnesota. Is you list based on the History of Pope County, a review of obituaries or cemetery research? I would be interested in a further review of the information on which your list is based. Is there a Pope County Historical Society? Any assistance you can give regarding Pope County research would be appreciated.

Manley Kjonaas Dec 9, 1998 at 14:40

In your listing of Civil War veterans in Pope County, you list Nels Hefta as Regiment "Unknown". He was a member of Company K of the 15th Wisconsin Regiment. He was my Great-Uncle. Manley Kjonaas in Indianapolis

Robert L. Smith Feb 16, 1999 at 14:06

Lake Amelia Cemetary is not one of the listed cemetareis in Pope County. It is located in Villard. My Great Grandparents are buried there. Their names are Alfred P. Johnson and Vina Johnson. He was from Sweden and his real name was Per Alfred Johnson. Is there a complete listing of all of the people interred there?

What a wonderful surprise to find you! We visited the Lake Amelia Cemetery in October 1997 and found my grandfather's gravesite , with three of his wives, and his step daughter. I also have information from the National Archives about his Civil War experiences---and a surprise to the family, evidence of a fourth wife! Have quite a bit of information on him, but need to know his first wife's maiden name (See query). Let me know if you want my info.

My sister is doing genealogical research on our ancestors and I am hoping to be of some help to her. Claus Knutson came to Gilchrist Township in Pope County in 1863 with his son, Knute Clauson and settled on Simon Lake. I'm hoping some of the sites here may produce some helpful information.

Susan A Maxwell Aug 15, 1999 at 18:15

I am so excited I'm literally shaking. To have found your website and to make contact with a place I remember so well. I am still so new to this electronic marvel, the computer and the WWW and the Internet...3 months ago I knew nothing of them...I didn't even know how to type. But the single-minded purpose of this new adventure has been to keep in touch with my siblings and to investigate who we are and where we came from. I know I was born in Granite Falls in 1939, started 1st grade at Dist 6(I think)..the road to Cyrus on what we still call the Ronnie Farm. When I was 6, we traded farms with my grandfather Robert L.Maxwell and moved to "The Simonson Place" where Dad farmed(successfully but unhappily, I'm afraid.)He was Lowell Maxwell. My brother, Evan and I went to Dist.53 and later...to School in Starbuck. Moving to Willmar in 1955 was, to say the least, culture shock. And the addition of 4 more siblings between 1945&1950 was indeed a major contribution to the post-war "Baby Boom" and enough to set any oldest child, oldest grandchild Princess(me, that is to say)on her royal little ear. Adding another daughter to the family in 1957 when I was a freshman at St Cloud State, moving to California in December of 1959 and the birth of my youngest (and final) brother in June,1960 rounded out the Maxwells as we were then. The importance of any birth/death/land holdings whatever of Maxwell or Deason that you are able to access and coroborate is important, not just to our valid geneological search but to rattle my childhood memories and help put order to a past of not so long ago and to fill in parts that are pre-historic to more than half of my brothers and sisters. I apologize for the length of this posting. It turned out to be more "me telling thee" than the other way round. I'm just so pleased to find you..out there..not in outer space, but right here in my own living room on the other end of a very long invisible thread called the Internet. Many, many thanks for being there and doing what you are doing. Sincerely, Susan Maxwell

Dawn Olson Sep 8, 1999 at 08:58

Keith, Glad to see that Pope County is on the genealogy track to helping people find their family members. I was born in Pope County but live in Maryland now. My family lives in Glenwood, but my ansesters are scattered throughout many counties in Minnesota. Could you post some links to other county genealogy or history groups in the state? My ancesters come from the Wright, Stearns, and Kandiyohi Counties and I am not having much luck locating much informaiton from these areas. Also, tell your father, Ray, hello for me. I served him coffee for many years when I was growing up and working at my Mother and Father's restaurant called Wimpy's. I am sure he will remember, my sister and I were not much more than 11 or 12 years old when we started serving coffee there.

To Marlyce Wilkerson from NC Guest book entry dated 16JAN98. My relatives are from the Mecklenberg/Irdell Co.s/Statesville, NC area and settled in Starbuck in the late 1800's. Their surname was Benson, many generations of preachers. Was their a group of NCers that moved up this way or was it just a small world kind of happening? Also, nice website, I'll visit again and check your page progress and queries for my missing family tree members from the Starbuck area.

Glenwood resident 1946 - 1963: Just wanted to say hello. This last Christmas, my children finally got to experience the frozen lakes of my childhood, and the fishing was great. What a wonderful experience for them. Although Glenwood continues to change, in many respects it stays the same too.

Terry Sylvester Jul 3, 2000 at 23:29

Looking forward to visiting your site more. Since I live in the area I have been able to visit the Pope County Historical Society and gleen all their information. I have many relatives past and present in the Pope County area. Leo Sylvester was my father-in-law and several of the obituaries list him as the soloist. His wife was Myrtle Solvie and she had many relatives in the area also. If anyone is looking for information on either of their families I would be happy to share and if anyone needs help with information from the St Cloud, MN area, I would be willing to do look ups, as I have had great help from others around the country. Keep up the good work. Terry

I was so happy to see my family names show up in the query area. I have responded to Jana Robertson and now left my own family query. Sure hope I get some response. I really want to track down my family root

In the 1950's I went to school in White Bear. I think it was called White Bear (Beach?) School. It was a small schoolbuilt out of stone, maybe a half dozen classrooms or so. Does anyone have info on this school? Several years ago, my brother & I visited White Bear & found the school. Has it been torn down or restored? Jackie

Like your site very much. One of the best summers I remember was spent in Starbuck at my grandfather's farm. His name was Simon L. Gaarder and he had a little jewelry store and watch repair shop in town. I remember the little train that came through town and I loved the time I spent going to school there. If anybody remembers, I was Beverly Brown then, would love to hear from my cousins or anyone else who remembers those days.
