This is a transcription of a Gartenarbeitbuch that my great grandfather Hermann Schlueter kept while he was the
groundskeeper/gardener at an estate called Ornshagen, Kr. Regenwalde, Pommern in the 1860s. (It's interesting to note that he was
only 14-16 years old at the time!) Some of the pages are German/English, others English only. The original translation was done
by a Lutheran minister many years ago, so some of the plant names may not be too accurate!
Note the variety of plants he mentions, including strawberries, asparagus, celery, various fruits and berries, and the number of
decorative plants. Ornshagen must have been a beautiful place while he was there! They also must have eaten well, though we don’t know how
much of this his family got to eat and how much “The Master” got. The references to “Lehmann” and “Greve” are presumably neighbors or
other workers. The family emigrated in 1868 and homesteaded in Nebraska.

The diary is signed at this point "Hermann Schlueter, Ornshagen, November 1, 1865". He was sixteen years old!
This is all I presently have of the Gartenarbeitbuch, though the original book is still in the family.
Hermann kept a log of their expenses for emigration:
From Wangerin to Berlin 6 marks
From Berlin to Bremen 13 marks
Meals in Bremen 5 marks
For overweight 6 marks
From Baltimore to Omaha 108 dollars
Overweight to Chicago 10 dollars
Overweight to Omaha 12 dollars
Meals in Chicago 6 dollars
Meals in Omaha 6 dollars
Omaha to Fremont 14 dollars
Meals in Fremont 4.30 dollars
Trunks to Fremont 2 dollars
Translation in Omaha 60 cents
Fremont to Beemer 11 dollars
For new money in Fremont ?
Family history says that Hermann wrote this little poem before leaving
Pommern, though it sounds more like World War I vintage:
Einig Deutschland eng verbunden
Wahren Rechtes treuer Hort
Endlich heilen deine Wunden
Freiheit wird dein Losungswort
Du mein Deutschland einst verkannt
Stehe fest O Vaterland.
Translated:
United Germany narrowly connected
True right's loyal hoard
Finally, your wounds heal
Freedom becomes your motto-word
You my Germany once misjudged
Be certain O fatherland.
