Parish Church of the Holy Trinity
Roman-Catholic parish: Smoldzino
The founder of that church was Princess Anna (1590-1660) the sister of Duke Bogislaw XIV the
last sovereign from the Gryfit dynasty in the Duchy of Western Pomerania.
Originally, the church had a rectangular shape. It was consecrated on 14th October 1632. The year of
consecration is written on the south eastern gable wall and on the weather vane. Due to the Thirty Years
War (1618-1648) the construction of the tower was abandoned and it was only in 1694 when the
construction was completed. At the beginning of the 17th century almost whole church furnishings was
made and now it belongs to the most precious Pomeranian remains of that time.
In the 19th century the church underwent several reconstructions and enlargements. In 1828 the
tower was deconstructed and the material was used for lengthening the nave to the northern west. In 1844
the galleries were built. In 1864 the roof and the northern west top of the church were renovated, as they
were heavily damaged by strong winds. In 1874 the transept was built and the church took the shape of the
Latin cross. Also the window openings were reshaped. In the main nave, above the entrance a small
pinnacle was constructed and covered with slate. In 1932, in the 300th anniversary of the official
consecration, a major repair of the church took place, which was confirmed by putting a note on the door.
Since 1992 the church has been under next repair and the furnishing has been renovated.
There used to be a cemetery round the church for many centuries.
