Ernest R. King

1914 - 1944

 

 

         - Memorial Services were held at the First Presbyterian Church with the Pastor Rev. Alexander assisted by the Ralph Lamb Post Legionnaires of Seaforth.  Mrs. L. M. Fuhr was the Organist.  Frank Smetak, Legion Commander presented the Unites States flag to the dead Soldier's Mother, Mrs. Clara King at the end of the service. 

        S-Sgt Ernest R. King was born Sept 16, 1914.  He was inducted into the Army Feb 3, 1942, went overseas June 1942, killed in action Nov 10, 1944 on Leyte Island in the Philippines.  King, a machine gunner, made an attack on a high hill called Breakneck Ridge on Nov 9, 1944.  On the following day he was hit by a enemy sniper and died almost instantly.  He was buried with military honors in the Military Cemetery near Corigard on Leyte. 

     Preceded in death, his father, Herbert (Bert) King.  Surviving him are his mother, 2 sisters, Eliza, Mrs. H. LaVerdure of Donley, Montana and Lizzie, Mrs. H. Olson of Missoula, Montana and 5 brothers, Howard of Comertown, Montana, Edward, James, George and Clyde of Seaforth. 

     All were at the service except Howard and Mrs. Olson of MT.  Others from a distance were Mrs. Mabel Oliver of Minneapolis, Ed Winslow of Warren, Mr. & Mrs. Paul King & Mr. Mrs. Francis King, both of Redwood Falls.
