"JUDGE" TRUESDALE DEAD
Passed Away Quietly in Bed at Duluth,
Minnesota
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sylvester Truesdell third son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Ezra
Truesdell and known all over this section of the county as
"Judge" Truesdell, passed away quietly in his room in a Duluth
residence last Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Heart
failure was the cause, according to reports received from
Duluth.
Mr. Truesdell retired the night before in apparent good
health, and a few hours after the regular time for his arising
on Thursday morning his door was forced open and he was
discovered dead. There were no signs of any struggle over the
passing away and Capt. Smallwood writes to A. B. Truesdell, a
brother of the deceased, that it seemed as though death had
come while the deceased was sleeping.
The remains were taken charge of by a Duluth undertaker and
the relatives after being notified, ordered the remains
forwarded to this place. They arrived here Sat afternoon over
the Northwestern and were met by a delegation of old soldiers
from John S Marsh Post. They were in good condition and it
was decided to have the funeral Sun afternoon from the
Methodist Church.
A large number of old acquaintances of the deceased attended,
the G. A. R. Post being present in a body and furnishing the
pall-bearers. The Church choir furnished the music and after
Rev. Jones preached as appropriate funeral sermon the remains
were taken to the Cemetery and placed in their last resting
place-The Truesdell family plot.
Mr. Truesdell was born Oct 18, 1842 and was one of a family of
13, nine boys and four girls, being the third in age of the
boys and one of three brothers that fought for the Union
during the Civil War, one of the number dying in battle. He
was born in Ohio and with his parents came to Goodhue County
in 1859 and in 1869 he moved with them to Redwood County,
settling on the farm a mile southeast of the city. He moved
from this place to Duluth in 1891 and has resided there ever
since. Mr Truesdell was a single man.
The deceased was a member of Company F, Eight Regiment
Minnesota Volunteers, that regiment being a part of the Third
Brigade, 1st Division of the 23rd Army Corps. The Company was
mustered into United States service at Fort Snelling Nov 18,
1862. To this Company belonged James Stevens, now residing in
Vesta and Matthew Wilson, now residing in Three Lakes. The
Company participated in the battle of Cedars, near
Murfreesboro, Tenn, the skirmish near Murfreesboro, Dec 7,
1864, near Kingston NC, March 7, 8 and 9, 1865, the skirmish
at Hickertown NC, March 31, 1864, at Tahkohokuta, Dakota, July
28, 1864, at little Missouri, Dakota, Aug 7 to 9, 1864,
skirmish on the N. C. R. R. Tenn, Dec 2, 1864 and on Overall's
Creek, near Murfreesboro, Dec 4, 1864. Mr. Truesdell was
wounded in the arm at the battle of the Cedars, Tenn and as a
result of his service as a subject of epileptic fits.
