JUSTUS H WASHBURN
North Redwood
Falls was thrown into a gloom on Sat. last by a fatal
accident of a very painful nature. The eldest boy
aged 10 years, son of Ira/Ellen (Crump) Washburn Sr.,
wheat buyer, had been sent to the elevator to let off
a quantity of wheat which stood in the hopper. In
order to reach the operating rod the boy had to climb
over the edge of the hopper and when he had pushed
back the rod he had evidently fallen after it head
downward into the bin and was sucked down as the
grain ran out. His jacket, falling over his head,
closed up the aperture entirely and the running
stopped. Nearly an hour afterward a son of Mr. Blrum
came to the elevator and saw the boy's feet sticking
up and pulled him out. The alarm was given and Dr
Pease sent for at once, but the child was long past
the help of medical skill. He must have smothered in
a few minutes after he fell in. The funeral took
place on Sunday and impressive services were
conducted in the church by Dr. Riheldaffer. Many
more people came to the services than the church
could contain. The parents have the deep sympathy of
the whole neighborhood.
