Cardinals Overtake Tracy to Win 13-7
DISCHER'S LONG RUN SCORES SIXTEENTH STRAIGHT WIN
After trailing for the first time in many a game, the
Cardinals proved Friday night that they can come from
behind and win as they set Tracy back 13 to 7 in a misty
rain that kept the grass as slippery as a hockey rink. It
was their sixteenth in the victory string.
Passes accounted for Tracy's touchdown in the first quarter
or perhaps nose out the Redwood High battlers as a welcome
gunshot ended the fray. Passes were responsible also
for the Cardinal victory, the Lauterbach to Discher
overhead combination taking the ball deep in Tracy
territory to start the first touchdown drive and a
beautiful run by Discher after he had received another from
Lauterbach giving the victory margin a few minutes later.
The first conversion attempt failed but the second was
good.
Except for a few early plays when the ends were sucked in,
the line turned in its best performance of the season.
Stopped cold by the forwards, the Scrappers resorted to an
aerial barrage that was alarmingly successful. Several
times the receiver would have broken away for touchdown
runs but for the consistent tackling of safety man Discher.
Redwood kicked off to Tracy, Catlin receiving on the 35
yard line stepping off eight yards before brought down by
Bollum. Stone and Main failed to gain and Starr punted to
the Redwood 19 stripe where Byram downed the ball.
Lauterbach hit the line for six, a short pass was
incomplete, Discher picked up three and punted on fourth
down to Starr who ran back 12 yards form midfield. They
tried the line three times for a total of only five yards
and kicked over the goal, Redwood taking the ball on the 20
yard line. Redwood Falls was offside, Discher making up the
penalty on the next play. He was stopped on his second
attempt and after Lauterbach had stepped up three, Discher
kicked to Starr who received on his 40 and returned 12.
Lauterbach spilled Stone for a loss on the first play and
Main was stopped in a try at the center of the line after
one yard but Starr broke around end for a first down. They
fumbled for no gain on the next play but Stone circled left
end for six and Starr broke through for four and first down
before Steele pulled him down. Coubal broke up the next
play, a pass was incomplete and an offside penalty pushed
them back to the 30 yard line. Just when the Cardinals
seemed to have halted the drive, Stone shot a long pass to
Catlin who went for the touchdown. Starr skirted right end
for the odd point. They received the kickoff on the 33 yard
line and made no return as the quarter ended. Starr slipped
around end for seven yards and Stone picked up three for
first down. They alternated on three plays netting but six
yards and Byram received the punt on the 20 stripe and
returned five. Lussenhop, who had gone in for Discher for a
few plays and then shifted to Byram's post as Discher
returned to the game, stepped through for two and
Lauterbach added another two yards. Lauterbach hit the line
again and seemed in the clear when he fell for a two yard
gain. Starr received the punt, returning 15 yards to the 32
yard line. The Cardinals were showing more scrap with the
score against them and when Tracy failed to gain, Discher
took the punt for a 20 yard ride to mid field. Lussenhop
dashed off three, Lauterbach plunged for two and then shot
a bullet-like pass to Discher who took the greasy ball to
the 39 yard line before he was pulled down. Lauterbach
plunged for five and Aarthun broke through for ten. Discher
made the third first down on the five yard line and then
carried four times, edging forward a trifle on each plunge
before crossing the goal. Lauterbach tried to make the
point around right end and was pulled down inches from the
line.
Score Tracy 7, Redwood 6. After two attempts, Welch kicked
out of bounds of Redwood's 35 yard line. Dickmeier, who
replaced Lussenhop, made three on the first play and
Lauterbach shot another long pass to Discher who weaved
across the field with three Tracy men at his heels for the
second touchdown. Bollum's placement try was good. Score
Redwood 13, Tracy 7. Stone received the kickoff, returning
20 yards to the 40 stripe. Discher intercepted a pass in
midfield. Redwood was penalized for offside and Aarthun
busted through for four as the half ended. Redwood Falls
kicked off again and Starr was tackled on the 22 yard line
by Discher after receiving a lateral. They lost two yards
on a try at the line and punted, Discher returning 10 to
their 40 yard line. Aarthun picked up three but two off
sides on consecutive plays forced Redwood back to the 47
yard line and when a pass failed to click, Discher kicked
out of bounds on the 25. Tracy was penalized 15 yards and
got off a poor punt but the play was recalled when Redwood
was offside. Their second try was better, although Discher
ran it back 15 to the 38. Dickmeier went off tackle for
three, Aarthun picked up two and when a pass failed,
Discher kicked out on their 25. The wind was mak ing
kicking difficult. Starr hit the line for three and then
tried an end run for two before kicking out of bounds on
the 43. Discher, Lauterbach and Johanneck, replacing
Aarthun, ran up seven yards and Discher's punt again went
out on the 25. Stone made three but Starr was stopped on
two tries and they punted back to the 46. Lauterbach passed
to the 46. Lauterbach passed to Discher for 20 yards.
Discher broke through for five to the 21 stripe. Johanneck
and Dickmeier made first down with short gains but a pass
failed, Redwood was offside and after tries by Dickmeier
and Discher, the quarter ended. With two green men blocking
for him, Discher was almost tackled before he could get off
a pass which was wide of its mark. Taking the ball on
downs, Tracy kicked to their 43 and after three thrusts at
the line, Redwood kicked out of bounds on their seven.
Redwood was penalized for offside but in spite of the gain
Tracy kicked to Red wood's 44 on the next play. Discher
made three and Aarthun five but a backfield in motion
penalty cost five. Discher made three and then attempted to
kick but they charged through the secondary to upset him
and start the ball on a long roll with a dozen players
after it. Discher finally recovered and the officials ruled
clipping on the play and gave Redwood the ball, first down.
Lussenhop made two and Redwood kicked out on the 25. They
made three yards on the 25. They made three yards on three
plays and punted, Discher returning 20 to midfield. He hit
the line for five, Lauterbach plunged for another, a pass
was incomplete and Redwood punted to Starr who returned 15
to the 28 yard line. Resorting to the air in a desperate
attempt to score, Stone tossed to Catlin who caught the
ball at the same time that Discher did the rule in such
cases being that the pass is complete. Starr took a long
shot on the next play and was dragged down by Discher on
his 30. Discher intercepted the next one on the eight yard
line but Redwood carried twice for five yards and then
fumbled, Tracy recovering only five yards from the goal.
While fans held their breath anticipating another barrage,
the gun sounded.
