Betty Ann Solome Adams

Betty, the second daughter of Walter and Beryl Adams, was born May 17, 1938, on the family farm at Burnside, Manitoba. She attended school at Burnside and Edwin and graduated from the Portage Collegiate in June, 1956. She took six weeks training at the Tuxedo Teachers College and taught school for one year at Valley Stream School, north of Austin, Manitoba. She married Kenneth Gerald Johnson at Burnside, June 29, 1957, and moved to his home at Exira, two and half miles north of Austin. The couple had three children: Ray Kenneth, born January 12, 1958; David Perry, born January 24, 1959; and Doreen Betty, born February 4, 1961; Ken was employed by C.N.R. working away from home in the summer months as a machine operator, at various places in Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and Minnesota for about 16 years, and on track maintenance the rest of the time. Betty was a homemaker until she took an office job with the R.M. of North Norfolk, at MacGregor, from September, 1969 to July, 1971. A little later she took a nine month business course in Portage La Prairie, and began working as a payroll clerk for Pine Creek School Division No. 30 on May 1, 1971.

Their three children attended Austing Elementary School and the MacGregor Collegiate.

Ray was employed for a couple of summers with C.N.R. before moving to Fort McMurray in 1978, where he has worked for Conmac Construction for over ten years. He is married to Bonnie Becker from Elm Creek, Manitoba. They have one son, Christopher Ray, born September 21, 1978.

David finished school in June, 1977. He was also employed with C.N.R. for a few months. When the C.N.R. van he was riding in collided with a Pine Creek School bus, north of Sidney, Manitoba, it killed him and two other men, on October 19, 1977. He is buried in the Austin Cemetery.

Doreen graduated from high school, took a secretarial course at Red River College, and was employed with the Toronto Dominion Bank for five years before accepting a position in the office of Canadian Freightways. She married Brian Peter Giesbrecht of Austin. They have two sons, Kevin Brian, born January 5, 1983, and David Peter, born February 10, 1984. They live in the Crestview area of Winnipeg, where Brian is employed with Dimatec, Inc., drilling equipment and supplies.

After 30 years at Austin, Betty and Ken moved into a new home in Carberry, Manitoba, in October, 1987. Ken has retired with 34 years service with C.N.R. and Betty has been with with Pine Creek School Division for 16 years, the last ten in the capacity of secretary-treasurer.
