Bailey celebrates 100th birthday

Viola Bailey, Longview, turned 100 Jan. 23, and celebrated with a gathering at Frontier Extended Care Center, where she is a resident.

Viola's three daughters, Vivian Schroeder and Bessie Loren, both of Longview and Maryan McGovern, Lynnwood, Washington, arranged and hosted the party. A brother, Clarence Nordstrom and a sister, Clara Sundberg, attended, along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

Viola dedicated herself to home, family and church.

She is the only living charter member of the Longview '23 Club. She and her late husband, Longview Police Department Captain John Bailey, arrived in Longview August 10, 1922, from Hallock where John worked on the building of Long-Bell and joined the Longview police in 1925. He and his brother, Ray, were featured in the Dec. 10 "Longview Revisited" column in The Daily News.
