Notes: Marcus' parents were immigrants from Germany. He had a younger brother, Frank, and a sister, Elsie. He attended Oberlin College in Ohio and studied law and following his graduation he was a county attorney until 1886 when he was appointed as an Indian agent at Browning, Montana.

Sarah's father was born in County Down, Ireland and her mother, Henrietta Dana Spengler, was Pennsylvania Dutch.
