The Concession System in Ontario

Late in the Fifteenth Century, a Lazarus Berna emigrated to Thayngen, Canton Schaffhausen, Switzerland from the vicinity of Debrecen, Hungary. Since that time, the family name was altered, first to Bernat, and then to Bernath. Beginning In the mid-Nineteenth Century, some of his descendants emigrated from Thayngen to North America and Australia. Thayngen, however, remains a "Bernath town" until today. In 2000, there were twenty-four Bernath entries in the Thayngen telephone directory. There are also many Bernath families in the North America that trace their lineage directly to Hungary.

The Kanton Schaffhausen Familienschien records the birth and deathdates of many of our Bernath ancestors, as well as the birthdates of Hans Konrad and Barbara Ogg Bernath and their six children, but only Barbara's deathdate. It also indicates that the six Bernath siblings emigrated: Clemens, to "Amerika" before 1857; Barbara, Konrad II, Jakob and Johann Georg[e], to "Amerika" in 1857, and Johannes [John] to "Australien" in January of 1858. It does not record that Hans Konrad also emigrated, although he did accompany four of his children to North America. He is buried in Knox Presbyterian Cemetery in Cranbrook, Ontario, Canada, and his gravestone records his having died on November 21, 1887.

Hans Konrad and his family apparently landed in New York. It may have been their intention to remain in the United States, but Konrad feared that his sons would be conscripted to fight in the American Civil War, so they chose to settle in Upper Canada instead. The brothers may have intended to work on the building of the Canbadian Pacific Railroad, but only the fourth son, Jakob, remained a railroader.

The family first settled in Vaughan Township, York County, Ontario. By 1859, Konrad II homesteaded in Huron County, near Ethel [Concession 10, Lot 39, Grey Twp.] Clemens would eventually purchase a farm in Wellington County [The 10th of Wallace]. Barbara married Reinhard Rupp, who farmed adjacent to Konrad II, and died an early death. Jakob died in a railway accident in 1872, and Johann Georg[e] returned to the United States in 1879 to homestead in Kittson County, Minnesota.

In 1858, Johannes [John] headed to Australia aboard the Scottish Chief. He settled near Geelong, Victoria, failed at vidiculture and later raised "stoned" fruits.

Within a century-and-a-half, the descendants of Hans Konrad and Barbara Ogg Bernath descendants settled in the Canadian Provinces of New Brunswick, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia; the U.S. States of Minnesota, North Dakota, Washington, California, Arizona, New Mexico, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York; and in the Australian States of Victoria and New South Wales.

This is their genealogical record, first set-down by Violet Bernath [1910-1988] and Francis Wilcoxon Bernath [1908-]. I have endeavored to bring it up-to-date, with assistance from Alice Annett Vine [1929-], Mildred Annett Acheson [1930-], Marlys Green Robinson [1931-], Jean Black Stewart [1931], Harland Beery [1933], Marlene Dungey Yuill [1933], Delphine Dahlberg Bernath [1939-], Mary Hucks Norcliffe [1942], Kevin John Hendra [1943-], Robert William Bernath [1945-], Sharon Armstrong Peachey [1950-], Barbara Mason Redford [1954], and Stephen Johes [1970].

As of this writing, there are more than twelve hundred entries in this genealogy, but many gaps remain. It will never be finished. But from the beginning until now, someone has always stepped forward to carry it into the next generation. I am confident that I will not be the last to do so.
