Nellie Elizabeth Brown Bernath 1890 - 1959
Jacob, his wife, Nellie, and their three children, Llewellyn, Forrest, and Lola moved from the St. Vincent, Minnesota area to Yakima, Washington, in the early 1930's. Jacob was employed by the Yakima Police Department and on October 23, 1940 was promoted to acting Chief of Police when Chief Harold A. Robinson left for active duty as a lieutenant iin the United States Navy. Shortly after Robinson returned from the war, "J.J." retired. His cousin, Harland Beery has observed: "No matter his interim title, he was forever after "Chief" around our town. My first newspaper job was a police reporter and I never heard him called anything but."
When Jake's nephew visited Yakima in 1939, he noted that everyone downtown would greet his uncle with a "Hi Jake!" Even the "fancy-dressed women" greeted him in this way. No matter where they took their meals, they were always "on the house."
