John N. Bernath, oldest of ten children, was born July 12, 1866 to George Bernath Sr. and Catherine Rupp near Ethel, Ontario, Canada. His father, George Bernath was born December 21, 1840 at Schaffhausen, Switzerland and his mother, Catherine Dunnerl ? was born June 24, 1842 at Alsace Lorraine, France. Other children of this family were: Salome (Mrs. John Adams); Margaret (Mrs. J. M. Thompson); Albertine (Mrs. Charles Oakes); Julia (Mrs. Charles Hart); Mary (Mrs. Arthur Hart); Barbara (Mrs. James Brown); George, Jr.; Daniel and Jacob.
John Bernath filed on his homestead in Hill Township, February 14, 1891, and received his final papers in 1898 during President McKinley's term in office.
While homesteading, he lived in a sod shanty. Later, he moved into a wooden-pole cabin which was eventually turned into a machine shop when his new frame home was built.
Upon his marriage to Sarah Nolte, daughter of a prominent pioneer family, he was presented a team of oxen as a wedding gift from his parents. It was with this team of oxen that he broke his first quarter section of land.
The children of Sarah and John were: Matilda (Mrs. Harold Armstrong); Martha (Mrs. Frank Matthew); Esther (Mrs. William Griffith) and Edward J. Bernath.
After the death of Sarah Nolte Bernath, John was united in marriage with Jessie Doig of Forfar, Scotland, who had come to the United States for a visit with her Aunt, Mrs. Sandy Blair, of St. Vincent Township.
Children of the above marriage include: Dorothy (Mrs. Porter R. Johnson); Ethel (Mrs. Carl Lundeen); James; Wilbur; and June (Mrs. William Moore) of which the first three were born in Hill Township.
In 1911, Mr. John Bernath and family moved from the farm to their new home in St. Vincent, Minnesota. Mr. Bernath rented his 735 acre farm to Mr. Ole Berge, who in partnership with Mr. Harold Armstrong worked the entire farm for the coming season.
John continued to add to his farm as he was able until it became one of the largest farms in Kittson County.
The St. Vincent New Era quoted Mr. Bernath as an example of what Kittson County land will do for an energetic farmer.
In addition to farming, John was interested in several enterprises of which he held office, such as, being a stockholder in the St. Vincent and Humboldt State Banks; St. Vincent and Humboldt elevators; member of the St. Vincent School Board, as well as, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
His son, James A. Bernath, took over the homestead, farming it successfully and more extensively, and Gerald Bernath, son of James, is continuing with the large farm operation.
James married Dora Pearson of Nevis, Minnesota, who taught several years in the St. Vincent poublic school during the early 1930's.
Dorothy, who lives in Grand Forks, North Dakota spent most of her years as Secretary for the Mayflower Transit Company and also the Johnson-Gillander Building and Construction Company until her retirement.
Ethel, taught school in Kittson County for nine years, beginning in 1928. Seven of those years were spent at Humboldt, Minnesota. After her marriage in 1937 to Carl Lundeen of Crookston, Minnesota, she became an elementary teacher in the Crookston Public Schools, teaching thirty in the Franklin Building. She is well known for her forty-one years of teaching.
Wilbur is retired and lives with his wife, Hannah, at International Falls, Minnesota.
June is the wife of William Moore, a successful farmer in Kittson County.
