Elphie Bogestad, 92, of Donaldson, died at the Karlstad Nursing Center in Karlstad on Wednesday evening, May 1, 2002.
Elphie A.M. Stromgren was born on the family farm in Jupiter Township near Lake Bronson on September 15, 1909, the daughter of Algot "Albin" and Mathilda (Dahl) Stromgren.
She was baptized and confirmed at the West Emmaus Lutheran Church and attended country school one half mile from her home.
On December 19, 1931, she was united in marriage to Norman A. Bogestad. They settled on a farm east of Donaldson and made their home there. Together, Norman and Elphie farmed seed potatoes, small grains and livestock. In the early 1940's they started the Bogestad Trading Company in Donaldson which Elphie helped to manage until its sale in the 1970's.
After Norman's death in September of 1955, Elphie and their son, Larry, assumed the respsponsibility of running the family farm. She was always happy when she could have an active role in the farm. Elphie was a long time resident and former Mayor of Donaldson.
She was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, WELCA, and the church council. Elphie was also a member of the West Emmaus Cemetery Association and the Kittson County Historical Society. Elphie was an active member of the Donaldson community until 1997 when she entered the Karlstad Healthcare Center.
Family members include a son, Larry (Kathleen) of Fargo; four grandchildren, Greg (Jean) Bogestad of Donaldson, Jody (Brent) Bowman of Kennedy, Jan (Dennis) Gray of West Fargo, and Jacki (Mike) Jensen of Drayton; ten great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaugher; two sisters-in-law Anna Stromgren and Ruby Stromgren; as well as nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Norman; brothers, Carl, Gotfred, Leonard and Marvin; and sisters Signe Strogren, Nancy Stromgren, Esther Stromgren and Esther Mattson.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 4, 2002 at 2 p.m. in St. Olaf Lutheran Church at Donaldson. Interment was in the Kennedy Cemetery. Rev. Ben Carlsen presided.
Special music provided by great-granddaughters, Amanda Bogestad and Melissa Bowman duet, Ron Fossell, soloist and Marlys Nelson, organist.
Honorary pallbearers were great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.
Pallbearers were Ronald Fossell, Roger Bogestad, Wayne Stromgren, Earl Mattson, Dean Stromgren and Allen Renville.
Arrangements were with Hughes Funeral Home, Hallock.
