Freetown Past & Present says it is believed that Samuel Clow and his wife, Jane Irwin Threadgill, moved to Freetown in the spring of 1875. Samuel purchased 50 acres of land (code 72), 05 Feb 1875 from Henry James Cundall and sold it to James Hixcox, 28 Dec 1882, and an additional 150 acres (code 65) from John Thomson on 05 Feb 1875. He received a lease to his father's land at North Wiltshire on 16 Feb 1844.

He was a progressive farmer and owned a good acreage. He also established a lime kiln on his property (code 65). He and his wife affiliated with the Methodist Church in Freetown.
