1894 - 100 years ago
A man was found murdered about one mile and half west ofPembina Wednesday evening. A post mortem examination was held Thursday,but as yet we have not heard anymore.
A new butcher shop is being built between this office andthe store of N. Dure and Son, by Mr. John Ryden. The Enterprise is deadin line now, a butcher shop on one side and a saloon on the other.
A grand carnival will be held in the Hallock rink Friday,March 1, only two weeks from today, so do not hesitate but commence nowand prepare your costume. There will also be prizes given the best ladyand gentleman skater.
The noted Red River Bill was arrested last week for stealingwheat from Mr. McIlraith, of Clow town, and had his preliminary hearingbefore Justice Nelson Wednesday, but the evidence in the case being insufficient,the prisoner was discharged.
It has been rumored that the skating rink was nothing morethan a gambling den and that it is not a fit place for any respectable personto spend the evening. We would like to inform those very talkative poartiesthat their remarks are very erroneous and that the writer being one of theproprietors of the rink, would like to have said parties prove same or kindlykeep such slurring remarks to themselves.

Walter Westberg, son of Mrs. Olof Westberg, who has fourother sons in the navy, arrived home this week and has already left hereafter having served two years in the navy on board one of the largest battleshipsin the U.S. fleet.
Mrs. John Swanson was elected president of the HallockGarden Club at the annual meeting last week.
Miss Hilder Baker is away this week enjoying a vacationin Duluth as guest of her brother and family. Mrs. Melvin Holmquist is takingover her duties in Dr. Stocking's office during her absence.
Mrs. Byron Hanson and son Marvin spent the weekend visitingat the A. C. Diamond home at Humboldt. Mr. Byron Hanson left on the Winnipegflyer for Minneapolis to spend several days visiting his brother, LeRoy,who is a student at the University.
Born to Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Hemmes Feb. 10, a baby girlat the Hallock Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Earl Wyman, Pembina, won a cash prize amounting to$10,000 in a Pillsbury Bake Off contest held last week at Atlanta, GA. Shewon with a cake she baked called "Very Berry Lemon Cake." Mrs.Wyman was the top winner in the Convenience Mix division of the contest.She had previously won awards other years.
The City Water Department reports that water breaks herehave been leaking between 80,000 and 100,000 gallons of water per day. Thewater saturates ground near the break in one instance and in another ithas found its way to the surface and flooding streets on Hallock's westside.
Hallock had its first major fire loss during the presentwinter last Wednesday night. The home was one that was formerly and recentlyowned by Blaine Gillie of Hallock and occupied by his family. Mr. Gillierecently sold the property which subsequently changed hands again and latestreport is that it was owned by Lawrence Ward, chairman of the Board of CountyCommissioners.

Emerson, Manitoba has intentions of hooking up to the NorthKittson Water line, abandoning dependence on the Red River, if all goesaccording to plans by mayor Bill Wightman.
Tommy Jon Deere, junior center for the Kennedy Rockets,joined the 1,000 point club amongst state high school basketball playersas he attained that honor in a game against the Lancaster Cardinals. Heis the son of Louis and Mary Louise Deere.
Local Teams fared well in the annual Bill Ekwall MemorialMixed Bonspiel held at the Hallock Curling Club with three teams makingthe finals in the three events where were captured by Canadian rinks. TheRager Cadieux rink, Dominion city, took forst event honors by defeatingthe Tom Klegstad rink, Hallock. In the second event, it was Dough Buckingham,Winnipeg, over Jim Thomson, Hallock. Pete Suderman, Winnipeg, son the thirdevent by beating Dan Younggren, Hallock, in the finals.
The Hallock girls rolled to their ninth straight win ofthe season, dumping Roseau 45 - 16.

Paul D. Craigmile, Branch Manager of American Federal SavingsBank, Hallock, has been promoted to Assistant Vice President.
Jonathan Carlson, Hallock, and Kim Lockman, Lancaster,annouce their engagement and forthcoming marriage.
The Lynette Cadieux rink, Dominion City, won the FirstEvent; The Danny Younggren rink won the Second Event and the Kelly DakkenRink, Drayton won the Third Event at the Mixed Bonspiel held recently atthe Hallock Curling Club.
The Kennedy Rockets took a giant step in Northern LightsConference play by winning the three games played last week. Kennedy's unblemishedconference record stands at 10 wins and they assured themselves of no lessthan a tie for the conference title with the two games left to play.
