1899 - 100 years ago
Earl Jarvis, the St. Vincent cigar manufacturer, was intown in the interest of those who handle his goods. Earl makes a good cigarand all Hallock cigar dealers out to give him a trial.
"Scoop," the Lake of the Woods trapper and hunter,was in Hallock. Scoop doesn't like the new wolf law very well. He says carryingthe carcass of four or five wolves to the nearest town clerk from the wildsof Minnesota is not a very desirable load - especially the odor, in thesehot summer days.
At the fireman's medal contest, Wm. Inglis took the medalfor coupling, Wm. Dure, for ladder climbing, and Jim Benson for running.
John Smith had a very narrow escape of being goared bya vicious bull. As it was, he was tossed around rather roughly and escapedwith a broken collar-bone and severe bruises.
Married at Hallock, June 1, was E. A. Kindler and AnnieDagen, both of Donaldson. Mr. Kindler is well known and much respected inthe county, having bought wheat at Donaldson for many years. His bride,Miss Dagen, is one of Donaldson's young ladies and the daughter of one ofthe most prosperous farmers in that neighborhood.

Mr. and Mrs. Philip G. Lundell, Kennedy, became grandparentsthree times in one week. A baby girl, Maureen, was born to Eugene and Ruby(Lundell) Maloney, Kennedy, May 27; a baby boy was born to Kenneth and Joyce(Anderson) Lundell, Chicago, June 4; and a baby boy was born to Allan andDoris (Lundell) Bernstrom, St. Paul, June 5.
Garfield Easter, Wm. Sylvester and Emmons Mathew are makingextensive repairs on the farm residence and barn of Levi Diamond.
Mrs. G. A. Knutson and children left for their summer vacationwhich they plan to spend at their lake cottage located on Maple Lake. Theyplan to spend most of the summer there.
Betty Gullander, Marilyn Johnson and Joan Lindberg arrivedhome from Gustavus Adolphus and will enjoy their summer vacation here attheir respective homes.
Mr. and Mrs. Victor Holmquist returned home from St. Peter,where they had motored to attend the graduation of their son, Glenn, fromGustavus Adolphus college. Glenn has accepted a teaching position near Mankato.
Mr. and Mrs. John Swanson motored to St. Paul where theywill attend the graduation exercise at Macalester College when their sonLeonard will receive his college degree.

Loren, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Dean Younggren,had an unfortunate accident, may 24. Mr. Younggren had just adddles up Loren'shorse and he had mounted when the horse reared up, the horn of the saddlestriking Loren in his abdomen and he fell off the horse. He had emergencysurgery at the U of M Hospital.
The Hallock District of Ottertail Power Co. recently receiveddelivery on a new Reach-All hydraulic basket truck. Harlan Caron, districtmanager, said the new equipment costs $16,000 and is insulated to permitmaintenance on hotlines carrying up to 7200 volts. It will reach 35 feetinto the air.
Scott Flatland lost no time after graduation in decidinghis future and getting right at it. He graduated Sunday and Tuesday he wasa member of the United States Air Force and already in San Antonio, Texas.
Mrs. Dennis Sarnowski, Menasha, Wisc. and Mrs. David Sorensonhosted a pink and blue shower honoring Beverly (Sorenson) Swenson, Lancasterat the David Sorenson home.

Three members of the Hallock-Kennedy-Kittson County Northtrack team will compete in the state track meet. Brad Anderson and LindaNoel, seniors and Joel Anderson, a sophomore. Anderson won the Region 8Along jump with a jump of 21' 2 1/2". Noel won the high jump at regionwith a height of 5'4". Anderson was second in the 100 meter dash witha time of 11.44.
Curtis Forfang, Hallock area, was recently appointed adirector of the Kittson county Fair.
James and Betty Ann Shablow, Lake Bronson, and Mary Annand the late Larry Schmiedeberg, Lancaster, announce the engagement of theirchildren, Pattijo Shablow and Bobby Schmiedeberg. An Aug. 19 wedding isplanned.
Robert and Nola Lindegard are the parents of a son, ScottRobert, born Ma 2. He has two sisters, Dawn and Joni. Grandparents are Loisand Jerry Lindegard and Robert and Dorothy Muir.

Mr. and Mrs. Phiullip Bengtson are the parents of a babyboy born June 2. He has two sisters, Elizabeth and Erica and one brother,Micah. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Lundell, Kennedy and Mr. andMrs. Leonard Bengtson, Hallock.
Tim and Marilyn Maloney and Timothy Jr. are settled intheir home which they recently purchased in Virginia Beach, VA. Tim continuesas a buyer for the Navy.
Jeremy Backous captured the first place finish at the Section8A golf tournament held in Bemidji with rounds of 37-39 He will advanceto state competition.
