1899 - 100 years ago

Work on the new race track started with fifteen teams.As the teams make the rounds one would think a circus or something elsestruck town.

Dr. Demars reported the arrival of new baby boys at thehomes of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Nelson and Mr. and Mrs. Keinholt.

John McGlashen, August Kruse, Hugh Griffith, A. Rudbergand Commissioner Gamble were passengers from St. Vincent. Mr. Gamble cameto attend the meeting of commissioners, while the others were over on apleasure and business trip.

Among the finest new potatoes we have seen raised in thiscounty this year are those of Mr. E. Norland. We predict Mr. Norland a bigprize winner at the coming fair if he makes an exhibit.

Among business at the county commissioner's meeting wasthe board closed a deal for a steam heating plant for the courthouse. Itis estimated that this will be a saving of about $300 a year to the county.The board also arranged for a complete drainage system for the courthouseand grounds and reduced taxation three mills, which is also a saving ofnearly $7,000 per annum to the taxpayers of the county.

The new baseball ground will be opened Aug. 1 with a hotgame of ball between Marshall and Kittson counties.

To remove freckles, mix one ounce lemon juice, a quarterof a dram of powdered borax, half a dram of pulverized sugar, and let standin a glass for a few days; then apply it and let it dry on the skin. Orapply with a linen cloth two tablespoons of grated horseradish mixed witha teacup of sour milk. If a girl freckles easily she should keep this lotionand use it frequently, being careful not to allow it to touch her eyes.- Ladies Home Journal

The Hallock Midget baseball team took the District 32 championshipat Lake Bronson. The team is coached and managed by Arnold Hennum. The boyswho make up the Hallock squad are: pitchers, Ronald Curtis, Neil McEwen,Charles Argue; catchers, Robert Ferguson, Mike Rabe; Eddie Gillespie, first;Kenneth Johnson, second; Richard Rustad, CF; Robert Lucas, LF; MarshallMiller, RF; Frederick Mackenzie, RF; James Winters, CF; Duane Carriere,utility.

Over a hundred friends and relatives gathered to help Mr.and Mrs. Merle Callister celebrate their silver anniversary. A mock weddingwas given, followed by a musical selection by Mr. and Mrs. Glendon Winters.Lyla Lu Nordling read a humorous reading. A solo was sung by Donald Nordlingand a brother of the bride, Delbert Sjoberg, composed and read a poem, ValerieHunter and Margaret Lindstrom favored the group with a duet, and GerdisHoglin sang "I Love You Truly."

Bob Cameron and his nephew, Miles Kuckuk, Milwaukee, spentthe July 4th weekend at Westhope, N.D. visiting at the home of Mr. Cameron'smother.

Mr. and Mrs. James Swanson have returned to Hallock fromHastings and plan to make their home here. Until they can find suitableliving quarters, they are living at the farm home of Mrs. Swanson's mother,Mrs. Philip O'Hearn.

Burton Finney and Dale Gunnarson were married July 4.

The Stewart brothers entered their horses at the Hallockfair and won first, second and third places on the race track.

1974 - 25 years ago

Local drive-in movie buffs will be pleased to know thatthe 75-Hi Drive In Theatre has purchased a new transformer for its lightingsystem.

Mr. and Mrs. Willard Grundstrom, Kennedy, announce theengagement of their daughter, Joyce, to Gary E. Johnson, son of Mr. andMrs. Leonard Johnson, Hutchinson. An Aug. 3 wedding is planned.

M. C. Dipple, Rick Gustafson, Dan Haugstad, Kreig Turner,and Bruce Pantzer spent several days fishing at Lake of the Woods. Theystayed at the Dipple mobile home.

1989 - 10 years ago

All family members gathered at the Casper Mattson homeJuly 4 to help the Mattsons celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Thecouple was married April 9, 1939.

Mr. and Mrs. Melroe Gunnarson have enjoyed a two week visitfrom Vinnie Ekstrom, Louise's cousin, from Arvika, Varmland, Sweden.

An open house 50th wedding anniversary party was held inhonor of Olive and Leonard Mortenson at Red River Lutheran Church.

1994 - 5 years ago

Robert and Florence Dahl, Kennedy, announce the engagementof their daughter, Margo, to Jeff Miltenberger, son of Gerald and AgnesMiltenberger, Fargo. A Sept. 3 wedding is planned.

A yard party was held at the Bobby and Nola Lindegard hometo wish Jeff and Kim Sjostrand farewell.
