1899 - 100 years ago
Hon. Alex. McKinnon has accepted the appointment made byGov. Lind as the Red River member on the board of appeals for the inspectionof grain.
Jack Gillie brought in quite a curiosity in the shape ofa large, live mud turtle and made lots of fun for the small boys.
Married July 24 was Louis Parker to Miss L. O. Davos, bothof this county. Mr. Parker is a son of Mrs. Peters, wife of ex-Supt. Petersof this county, while Miss Davis is the daughter of Hon. E. N. Davis, Donaldson.
A big fire at Donaldson destroyed the stores and stockof Lund & Solem and A. Bloomsness, also the blacksmith and carriageshop of Martin Hannum, the hotel, furniture and barn rented by Frnk Halberg,together with other smaller buildings, so that the entire loss will footup to nearly $50,000.
In the electric storm this week, the Carney House at Emersonwas struck and set afire, but the quick action of the citizens put out theflames before they got beyond control.

The village has employed experts to kill rats with poisongas at the city dump grounds. Rat infestation is not great in Hallock butthere are some and the condition could run wild.
Mr. and Mrs. John Moe, who reside east of Hallock, returnedfrom a several weeks motor trip when they recorded a total mileage of over7,500 miles.
During the fair, 10 years old Gary, the son of Mr. andMrs. Glen Stewart, Hallock, is probably credited with saving the fair barn,which at the time was filled with blooded stock. Several small boys hadbeen playing in the barn with firecrackers which started a blaze.
Robert Younggren, manager of the Younggren Airport in Hallock,has accepted a position with the Northwest Airlines.
The Lancaster Olaf A. Bergquist Legion Post is just completingits new Legion hall, a structure 24 x 60 feet in size. The cost of the structurewill be approximately $8,000.
Miles and Lois Stenquist, motored here from Coronado, Calif.They are guests at the home of Mrs. Stenquist's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.N. Lang. They plan to locate in Hallock permanently. Mr. Stenquist willbe associated with the Orleans elevator and will buy grain.
Bob Krumholz was injured in the baseball game played atWinnipeg when the Hallock Indians met their Canadian cousins in a doubleheader game. Bob plays second base and was spiked in the right hand by arunner. He needed 12 stitches to close the wounds.
The marriage of Doris Ryden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. GunnarRyden, Hallock and S. Arthur Romano, the Bronx, New York, was solemnizedJuly 21 in Minneapolis.
Sheldon Fertig, Lake Bronson, and Alton Johnson, Hallock,passed their senior life saving course at Lake Bronson State Park.
Charles Matthew had the misfortune to break a bone in hisankle at the Humboldt-Hallock baseball game.

Fred Chounard, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Chounard, Hallock,enlisted in the army. He scored high in the Army electronic-mechanics entranceexam.
Pam Pieper, daughter of Mrs. Doris Pieper, Hallock, willattend the All-State Choir Camp at Bemidji.
On their return trip to Arizona from Lancaster, Don andDiane Fischer and Denise drove to Aberdeen, S.D. where they visited relativeswhich included the home of the Fischer quints, where Denise spent one dayand one night with the quints who are about the same age as she. Deniseis Elliot and Delphine Hunter's granddaughter.
Mr. and Mrs. Jean Hunt returned from an 1800 mile tripthrough beautiful country. They visited near Swan Lake, Saskatchewan, thenon to Amisk Lake, Flin Flon and the Pas in Manitoba.

A baby girl was born to Tracey and Brian Pantzer July 7.She has been named Alice Marie. Grandparents are mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Pantzer,Hallock, and Mr. and Mrs. Jim Richardson. She has a sister, Jennifer, five.
Evelyn Anderson attended Donnafae Anderson's retirementparty at the Lake Bronson Park Shelter.
Clarence Beck was honored as Mr. Baseball for all his hardwork and devotion to the Lancaster baseball program. Beck coached the LancasterIndependent team for 13 years and the Legion team for seven.

Marcus and Matthew Steien welcomed a sister to their family.Marissa Louise was born July 12 at Grand Forks. Marissa's parents are Mitchand Michele Steien, Karlstad. Grandparents are Roger and Beverly Pagnac,Stephen, and Larry and Sharon Steien, Karlstad.
Gordie Bernstom's fairly new pickup caught fire from electricalwiring July 17 and was totaled out.
Carol Visness, Kittson Central girls basketball coach,was selected to the Minnesota Girls Basketball Coaches Association Hallof Fame. She was the first female coach to achieve 300 wins and her careerbasketball coaching record is 321 wins to 116 losses.
