1901 - 100 years ago
"Honkers" have been so thick on grain fieldsduring the past week, the farmers have made repeated inquiries of Game WardenRidell, as to how to get rid of them. Great many of our farmers think thestrict game law has a tendency to making the big birds to fresh, but allthe encouragement they could get from Warden Ridell, was to use a littlesalt.
Z. S. Barrett, of Brett, Iowa, and a member of the firmof the Barrett & Samson Land Co., of this place, arrived in the cityTuesday last having in charge a number of land seekers. Upon arriving here,Mr. Barrett turned his charge over to Mr. King, the local representativeof the Barrett & Sampson Land office, who provided the newcomers withsome of the best land in the county.
Martin Higgins of Marquette, Mich., is here looking afterhis farming interest. Martin says that last year, farming with him was farfrom being a success, but this year, he says, he will put in every availableinch of soil, and with a little bit of luck he thinks he can come out ontop of the heap.

Coach Christianson tendered his resignation last week tothe local board of education. Mr. and Mrs. Christianson have both acceptedpositions to teach at Blackduck during the coming year.
John Erickson, a junior in Hallock High School, has beenselected to represent Hallock High School at the 1951 Boys State which willbe held at the University of Minnesota campus during the week of June 17to 23.
The American Legion Auxiliary of the Leonard Norberg Postof Hallock announces that Madrene Bockwitz has been selected as the Hallockrepresentative to Girl's State this year.
Valedictorian Billy Johnson is a son of Mrs. Oscar N. Johnson.
Glen Mumey, Salutatorian, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. LeoMumey.

The temperatures recorded for this week were as follows:a high of 68 degrees on Friday, April 9, a low of 18 degrees on April 11with no moisture recorded.
Plans for the All Class Reunion scheduled for July 1-4,are progressing with the help of Hallock Business People. They are beingcalled upon to help finance the big weekend and to put in time to make thereunion a big success.
Marv Hanson, a Kittson County farmer, won the endorsement of Minnesota's District1 DFL delegrates at their convention in Greenbush on April 6. The contestfor the DFL endorsement began with three candidates: Larry Holmes of MiddleRiver, Marv Hanson of Hallock, and Bob Carlson, Mayor of Thief River Falls.Bob Carlson withdrew from the contest and pledged his support to Marv Hanson.
Illegal use of drugs in Minnesota has been on the upswingfor several years with the number of reported narcotic offenses up 36 percentsince 1971, and arrests for illegal durg use has risen 61.3 percent duringthe same period, according to a report compiled by the State Bureau of CriminalApprehension Division (BCA). Kittson County Sheriff Pat Overend said thattwo drug related charges were made last year in the county.

Rather than laying off teachers for the upcoming consolidationand cooperation, Hallock is hoping to convince enough of them to leave theirjobs with incentives. The school's attorney said he expected the board wouldnon-renew all probationary teachers, and that both he and the MEA rep assumed,with this package, that the board would forego placing teachers on the unrequestedleave.
Pauline Olson of Hallock will be taking over the dutiesof Phyllis Schwenzfeier as manager of the Heritage as of April 16.
The Hallock Fire Department was called to a grass fireMonday one mile east of Agsco on the Gary Johnson land. Wednesday nightthe Lancaster Fire Department was dispatched to a fire near the FlorenceGorski home, the HFD was called to assist.
The grain report for this week 10 years ago was wheat at$2.50, barley at $1.78 and flax at $4.40.
KaMaR is being swamped by recyclables. Participation inthe three county recycling effort has been so great that several semi-loadsof recyclable materials are currently being stored in the central warehousein Karlstad.

State Representative, Jim Tunheim, and State Senator, LeRoyStumpf, congratulated the supporters of Lake Bronson State Park for theirsuccess in getting a building appropriation from the 1996 legislature. The$500,000 appropriation for an interpretative center was included in thisyear's capital budget bill. A revised version was included in the $500 millionpublic works bill approved during the last day of the 1996 legislative session.
