My Interview With

Maxine Holmstrom

Maxine (Szczpanski) Holmstrom was born May 14th in MarshallCounty, Strandquist, Minnesota. She lived with her mother, Clara (Price)Szczpanski and her father, Stanly. She has a twin sister, Marlene, sisterBetty Stalla, and Jo Anne and one brother, Jerry. She attended a one roomschool with no plumbing or indoor bathroom. The children took turns goingout to bring drinking water into the classroom each morning. She walkedtwo miles to get to school. They would have class programs and Christmasprograms. On their last day before summer vacation, they had a big schoolpicnic.

The family didn't have electricity or indoor plumbing beforeMaxine was 12 years of age. She milked cows by hand, fed chickens, gatheredeggs, helped with the vegetable garden and other chores.. She walked outto the field to bring lunch out to her father and the hired man who wereout working in the fields.

Maxine was 12 years old when the family built their newhouse with all the modern conveniences and also bought their first televisionset. "That was really exciting," says Maxine.

Maxine finished 8th grade in the country school and started9th grade in Strandquist High School. The school bus picked her up to takeher to and from school each day.

Maxine was crowned queen in her freshman class at a schoolcarnival.

She graduated with 18 in her class in 1956. The firstclass to graduate in the new gym.

Later that year, she moved to the Twin Cities to get employmentworking at Honeywell Industries.

She married Donald Holmstrom.

Two of their daughters were born in St. Paul, Debbie andKathleen.

Then, husband Donald worked for the Ford Motor Co.

Later that year, they moved back to Strandquist out toa farm. They raised cattle and other livestock. Donald also farmed withhis twin brother, Dean.

Two more daughters were born, Renee and Brenda. Brendawas a New Years baby in 1968. Her children attended school at Strandquistbeing involved in many school activities, including band, choir, and girlsbasketball. All graduating from Strandquist High School.

Maxine has been employed at Land-O-Lakes and the last sevenyears at the Karlstad Health Center in the Housekeeping Department.

Her hobbies include gardening, crafts, flowers, cooking,baking, flower arranging, and baby sitting when she is not working eachsummer. She has a big vegetable garden, flower beds, and big yard to mow. She cans and freezes vegetables and also makes jams and jellies.

She attends St. Edwards Catholic Church in Strandquist. She belongs to the ladies group there.

Maxine enjoys her family and baby sitting whenever shecan. Her family gathers to celebrate holidays and birthdays. She enjoysher grandchildren and goes to their school activities.
