Notes for George Francis Smolak:

In 1912, The Lancaster Herald, date of issue unknown, noted that, "The leap year is drawing rapidly to close and what have you Lancaster girls done to take advantage of this opportunity which comes to you only every four years at the most. After consideration we have concluded the girls in Lancaster are either too bashful to "pop" the question or else they have decided that "single Blessedness" is more desirable than the "double cussedness" or vice versa. For those willing to listen to some helpful hints we have prepared the following list of "eligibles" all warm hearted and ready to be sacrificed: George Smolak - Old enough to marry, surely. He is neat and punctual and would stay home every night, wouldn't smoke in the parlor and would not step on the new rug with his overshoes on. George is a little bashful and you would have him dead to rights as he would not dare to say no."

In 1913, The Lancaster Herald, date of issue unknown, reported that "Married at Hallock, Friday, March 7, 1913 Miss Mary Larter to George Smolak. Rev. Shields officiating. Mr. Smolak is employed as salesman in the Lancaster Mercantile Company. They have rented apartments over the post office and will immediately go to housekeeping."

In 1914, The Lancaster Herald, date of issue unknown, reported that "Mrs. George Smolak left last Sunday evening for Angela, Montana to join her husband who left a couple weeks ago to make preparations for taking up residence on their claim."

In 1918, The Lancaster Herald, date of issue unknown, reported that "George Smolak returned from Angela, Montana, where he has been located for the past three or four years. He will remain here as he says Kittson County looks mighty good to him."

In 1919, The Lancaster Herald, date of issue unknown, reported that George Smolak moved into the rooms in the Soo Hotel building formerly occupied by DeLace Johnsons".
