Obituary of Charles Matthews in The Telegraph-Journal, March 1952:

Ill only a week, Charles Matthews, Red Head, widely known resident died at the General Hospital yesterday. His death will be learned with regret by many friends. Mr. Matthews, a retired farmer, was a son of the late Henry and Jane Matthews, and was born in Alberton, PEI. He had been a resident of Saint John since 1905 and was 94 years of age.

His father was a shipbuilder of note in Plymouth, England, a member of the firm of Matthews and Turnbull Shipbuilding Company and his mother came from the Isle of Skye, Scotland. He served in the militia during the Boer War for seven years.

Throughout his residence here he had been engaged in farming, retiring about 20 years ago. Mr. Matthews was a Presbyterian. He had marked his 94th birthday on January 26 last. An ardent sportsman, he was particularly interested in fishing and hunting.

Surviving are his wife, eight daughters: Mrs. Joseph Lally, Watertown, NY; Mrs. Herbert Slater, Vancouver; Mrs. P. Wedge, Mrs Harold Sewell, Mrs. Stewart Pelkie, Mrs. Malcolm Foster all of Saint John; Mrs. Harold Bowers and Miss Margaret Matthews of Toronto; four sons: William Matthews, St. Andrews, and John, Charles (Dick) and Claude Matthews of Red Head, as well as several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A son, George Matthews lost his life during the Second World War while serving with the H.M.C.S. Athabaskan, in 1944. The body is resting at Brenan's Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, from where the funeral will be conducted this afternoon with service at 3 p.m., Entombment will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

The death of Mrs. Mary Jane Matthews of Red Head occurred at the Fair Villa Nursing Home yesterday after a long illness.

Born at Bloomfield in 1874, Mrs. Matthews was a daughter of the late John and Ellen (Blacquiere) Wedge. She had resided at Red Head formore than 50 years. Her husband, Charles Matthews, died in 1952.

She is survived by four sons, William H. of St. Andrews, and Charles J., Claude S. and John A., all of Red Head; six daughters, Mrs. Paul Wedge of Fair Vale; Mrs. Harold Sewell of Saint John; Mrs. Harold Bowers and Mrs. Valda Radojeviche, both of Wawa, Ont.; and Mrs. Stewart Pelkey and Mrs. Malcolm Foster, both of East Saint John; two sisters, Mrs. Annie Wattens and Mrs. Emma Daigle, both of Point du Chene; one brother, John Wedge of Prince Edward Island; 25 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.
