Summary of

The Life and Times of Captain Daniel Mathews of Maine

Robert R. King, The Life and Times of Captain Daniel Mathews of Maine (McLean, VA: American Society for Genealogy and Family History, 1991), 41 pages. $10.00

Daniel Mathews was born about 1761, probably in New Hampshire. During the Revolutionary War, he served in the New Hampshire militia from March 1776 to March 1777, during which time he was with the Continental forces besieging the British in Boston, and his unit went to New York City and Albany. He fought in the battle of Lake Champlain. When his enlistment expired, he was left sick in Albany in March 1777. He later served aboard the Continental frigate, the Hancock. He was involved in a battle against the British ship, the Fox. When the Hancock was captured by the British ship, Rainbow, he was taken prisoner of war and spent ten months as a British prisoner in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Following his service in the Revolutionary war, he established his family in Maine, living in Cushing, Lincoln County; Surrey, Hancock County; and finally in Stetson, Penobscot County. He died in 1823 in Stetson, Maine.

Sarah, the wife of Daniel Mathews, was born about 1757. We have found no indication of her surname or place of birth. She died probably in Stetson, Maine, sometime after the death of her husband.

Jonas Matthews, the son of Daniel and Sarah Mathews [Daniel most often spelled his name with a single "t" while Jonas most frequently spelled his name with a double "tt"]. Jonas was born in Maine in 1787. He married Susannah Milliken, who was the daughter of Elias Milliken and his wife Mary Patten. Susannah Milliken was also the sister of Matthew Milliken, who married Jonas' Matthews' sister Margaret. The marriage took place about 1808, probably in Stetson, Maine. They were the parents of 11 children. In 1817, his family moved to Dearborn County, Indiana, and briefly to Boone County, Kentucky, before returning to Dearborn County, Indiana. Before 1850, he and several of his children moved to St. Joseph County, Indiana. In 1864, Jonas and several of his children moved to Barry County, Michigan, where Jonas and his wife Susannah Milliken Matthews died in 1871 and 1885 respectively.

Descendants of Jonas Matthews, who are discussed in this volume initially lived in southern Indiana, northern Indiana, and in central Michigan. Surnames of his descendants are:

Matthews - Dearborn County, Indiana; St. Joseph County, Indiana; Barry County, Michigan

Noyes - Dearborn County, Indiana

Hall - Dearborn County, Indiana; St. Joseph County, Indiana; Barry County, Michigan

Crouch - Dearborn County, Indiana

Margaret Matthews, the daughter of Daniel and Sarah Mathews [like her brother, Jonas, Margaret appears to have spelled the family name with a double "tt"]. Margaret was born in Maine about 1789. She married Matthew Milliken, who was the son of Elias Milliken and his wife Mary Patten. Matthew Milliken was the brother of Susannah Milliken, who married Margaret Matthews' brother Jonas. The marriage of Margaret Matthews and Matthew Milliken took place on 26 December 1811, probably in Stetson, Maine. They were the parents of 9 children. In 1817, Margaret Matthews Milliken and her family moved to Dearborn County, Indiana. After the death of her first husband, Margaret Matthews married Gilbert Platt in Dearborn County, Indiana. We have not found a death date or place for Margaret Matthews.

The Children of Margaret Matthews Milliken were initially located in Dearborn County, Indiana, although some branches later moved to St. Joseph County, Indiana. One branch moved to Nebraska.
