M: John Brander, in PEI b. 1797, Chatham, New Brunswick d. Elmsdale, PEI, buried Mill River Cemetery. John was of Scotch descent. They lived in Chatham, New Brunswick and moved to Elmsdale when daughter, Jane, was about 16 years old (about 1857). They are buried in the cemetery where Dock Road and Mill River Road meet across from the RCMP station now. It is noted that Nancy (Brander) Matthews and Alexander Matthews were brother and sister but Mary Matthews, whose maiden name was Matthews, was said to not be related to the Matthews Clan or to her husband. She came from Brixham, Devon, England. Nancy (Brander) Matthews was the sister of Alexander Matthews whose son, Charles, married Jane Brander, daughter of Nancy and John Brander.

They lived on Dock on the property formerly owned by John William Forsythe and then by James H. Wilkie. They owned 69 acres according to the 1880 atlas. Their buildings were on the side of the brook near the highway. Thomas was a carpenter as well as a farmer. He built many of the older houses in the district.
