Now we come to Uncle John Matthews, son of the first man to settle here, with the exception of Mr. Currie [Note: Edward Wix baptized John age 2, Francis age 5, Marianne age 3 and James age 5 months Oct. 3, 1830 at Burgeo to William andSarah Curry]. Old father Matthews came here with his family in about 1795 as near as can be ascertained, and settled on Small's Island, known up to 1860 as Slade's Island. The wife of this man was a [Sarah *Wix 1830] Bagg, a daughter of old Mr. Bagg. How many of his family were born here no one knows, but probably one or two.

The sons were Thomas,, John, and William [Oct. 3, 1830 Wix baptized Anne 23, Sarah 19, Elizabeth 14, John 26, Joseph 5, John? 3 William 15 and Henry 7 months to John and Sarah Matthews]. I know of no others. There was in 1860 another family of Matthews but they do not seem to be of this family. Their [this other Matthews family] names were Samuel, Edward, and John. The daughters of the old man [the first Matthews] were; Ann, Frances, Maria, Elizabeth, Susan, Ellen, and one other who married and went to Bonne Bay long before 1860. The surname of her husband [the one who went to Bonne Bay] was Organ. She [or he] died in 1866.

Wild Cove Cemetery, Summerville, Bonavista Bay

Summerville was known as Indian Arm prior to the settlement being renamed in 1904. The Wild Cove Cemetery is an old Anglican Church Cemetery located at the farthest tip of the community accessible only by foot (approximately a 10 to 15 minute walk from the community), or by small boat. The cemetery is located on a grassy piece of land situated above the beach, and over the years a large number of headstones and graves have been lost due to erosion by wind, water and time. Some of those remaining are in good condition, others are very difficult to read. Almost all have beautiful lengthy inscriptions following the names of those resting there.

It is with great sadness that the family of the late Thomas Francis Matthews, age 86, announce his passing at the BVPHC in Monday, January 22, 2001.

He was predeceased by his wife Margaret Ann; daughter Sarah and son Dominic. Left with fond and loving memories are: son Philip (Mary Barrett), Baie Verte; daughters - Mary Francis Haas (Darrin Traverse), Baie Verte, Elizabeth Andrews (Keywood), Brent's Cove, Carmel Byrne (Albert), Brent's Cove, Anna Clarke (Chris), Barrie, ON, Faustina Murray (Junior Villafana), Toronto, ON; and daughter-in-law Marie Matthews, Brent's Cove. Also leaving to mourn: brother - Gregory Matthews (Agnes), Brent's Cove; sisters - Elizabeth McKay, Springdale and Mary Ellen McIssac, Stephenville; 28 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and a large circle of other relatives and friends. Father Edward Brophy conducted the funeral mass at St. John the Apostle Roman Catholic Church and Cemetery, Brent's Cove. Pallbearers were Richard Andrews, Jamie Haas, Raymond Matthews, Justin Matthews, Michael Byrne and Colin Matthews and the crossbearer was Debbie Domalian.

Passed peacefully away at the Hoyles Home June 20, 2000, Lorne Matthews of Musgravetown, in his 87th year. Leaving to mourn his loving wife Ella (Greening); son Everett (Joan); daughter Bernice (Claude) Bishop; four grandchildren Todd, Tammi, Dwight and Nancy; one brother Cerrick; and a large number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Rested at Fewer's Funeral Home, Lethbridge, Bonavista Bay. Funeral service held Friday, June 23, 2000, from the Musgravetown United Church with Interment at the United Church Cemetery, Musgravetown. Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Nfld or the United Church Cemetery Fund.
